SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 Small quantities of sodium, 1 to 10 μg/L, can be significant in high pressure boiler systems and in nuclear power systems. Steam condensate from such systems must have less than 10 μg/L. In addition, condensate polishing system effluents should have less than 1 μg/L. Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS) represents technique for determining low concentrations of sodium. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of trace sodium in high purity water. The method range of concentration is 1 to 40 μg/L sodium. The analyst may extend the range once its applicability has been ascertained. Note 1: It is necessary to perform replicate analysis and take an average to accurately determine values at the lower end of the stated range. 1.2 This test method is a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometric method for the determination of trace sodium impurities in ultra high purity water. 1.3 This test method has been used successfully with a high purity water matrix.2 It is the responsibility of the analyst to determine the suitability of the test method for other matrices. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D6071-14(2022) is the internationally recognized standard test method for determining low-level sodium content in high purity water using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS). Developed by ASTM International, this standard is vital in settings where trace sodium can have significant impacts, such as high-pressure boiler systems and nuclear power systems, where even small sodium concentrations (1-10 µg/L) are critical. The method applies to sodium levels ranging from 1 to 40 µg/L, ensuring reliable detection and quantification of sodium impurities in ultra high purity water.
Key Topics
- Trace Sodium Measurement: The standard addresses precise analysis of trace levels of sodium, essential for maintaining high purity environments and safeguarding critical infrastructure.
- Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (GFAAS): Utilizes advanced atomic absorption techniques for high sensitivity and low detection limits.
- Contamination Control: Stresses stringent cleaning procedures and use of appropriate reagent purity and plasticware to prevent sample contamination and ensure accuracy.
- Quality Control: Outlines robust calibration, verification, and quality assurance processes for reliable and reproducible results.
- Applicability and Limitations: The method has been successfully validated for high purity water matrices, and analysts are responsible for establishing suitability when testing other types of samples.
- Health and Safety: Emphasizes the user's responsibility to address safety and regulatory concerns and to use appropriate laboratory and environmental practices.
Applications
The ASTM D6071-14(2022) standard is widely used in:
- Nuclear Power Plants: Ensuring steam condensate and effluents from condensate polishing systems remain below strict sodium limits, thereby protecting turbine and reactor components.
- Power Generation Facilities: Monitoring water used in high-pressure boilers to prevent scaling, corrosion, and operational inefficiencies caused by sodium contamination.
- Pharmaceutical and Semiconductor Industries: Verifying water purity for processes requiring ultra high purity standards, where sodium interference can compromise product quality.
- Research Laboratories: Providing established methodology for trace element analysis in environmental water monitoring or experimental studies demanding the lowest detection limits.
Users of this standard benefit from:
- High Sensitivity and Low Detection Limits: Accurate quantification of sodium concentrations as low as 1 µg/L.
- Standardized Protocols: Repeatable results across laboratories due to comprehensive quality control and calibration procedures.
- Contamination Mitigation: Detailed guidance for minimizing external sodium contamination during sampling and analysis.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports adherence to operational and regulatory standards, especially in safety-critical industries.
