ABSTRACT This specification covers three types of deck waterproofing membrane systems designed for use on bridge decks which will receive an asphaltic concrete overlay. Type I are cold liquid-applied chemically curing membrane materials that that require a membrane protection course. Type II, on the other hand, are hot applied elastomeric membrane systems that also require a membrane protection course. And finally, Type III are preformed sheet membrane systems. All types are applied to a bridge deck to prevent the passage of water from the bituminous surface course to or through the bridge deck. Membrane systems shall be sampled as appropriate for each type, and shall conform to performance requirements and physical properties as to permeability, and pliability. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers deck waterproofing membrane systems designed for use on bridge decks which will receive an asphaltic concrete overlay. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D6153-23: Standard Specification for Materials for Bridge Deck Waterproofing Membrane Systems provides guidelines for selecting and applying membrane systems designed to protect bridge decks that will be overlaid with asphaltic concrete. Developed by ASTM International, this standard outlines the requirements for three primary types of waterproofing membrane systems, ensuring the prevention of water infiltration through the bridge deck. This protection is crucial in extending the service life of bridge structures and maintaining their long-term performance.
Key Topics
-
Types of Membrane Systems: ASTM D6153-23 defines three types of systems:
- Type I: Cold liquid-applied, chemically curing membrane materials requiring a protection course.
- Type II: Hot-applied elastomeric membrane systems, also requiring a protection course.
- Type III: Preformed sheet membrane systems.
-
Performance Requirements: All membrane types must meet strict criteria for:
- Permeability, tested via ASTM E96/E96M to limit water vapor transmission.
- Pliability, demonstrated by resistance to cracking or breaking under standardized bending conditions as detailed in ASTM D146/D146M.
-
Sampling and Quality Assurance: The standard prescribes sampling procedures to verify material conformity before installation. This process ensures accountability, consistent quality, and adherence to the specified requirements.
-
Packaging and Identification: Complete instructions for packaging, marking, and accompanying documentation are included to guarantee the traceability and proper use of products on-site.
Applications
Bridge deck waterproofing membrane systems specified in ASTM D6153-23 are critical for:
-
Highway and Railway Bridges: Protecting structural concrete from water ingress that could lead to freeze-thaw cycles, corrosion of reinforcing steel, and deterioration of deck materials.
-
New Construction and Rehabilitation: Specifiers and contractors use these systems both in new bridge construction and during the resurfacing or rehabilitation of existing structures, particularly when an asphaltic concrete overlay is part of the design.
-
Long-Term Durability: By preventing water penetration, these membrane systems help extend the lifespan of bridges, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance user safety by preserving structural integrity.
-
Public Infrastructure Projects: Essential in municipal, state, and federal infrastructure projects where durability and reliability of bridge decks are priorities.
Related Standards
ASTM D6153-23 makes reference to several additional ASTM standards that detail test methods and practices for materials evaluation and quality control, including:
- ASTM E96/E96M - Standard Test Methods for Gravimetric Determination of Water Vapor Transmission Rate of Materials: Used to determine the permeability performance of membrane systems.
- ASTM D146/D146M - Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Bitumen-Saturated Felts and Woven Fabrics for Roofing and Waterproofing: Applied for testing the pliability of membranes.
- ASTM D5167 - Practice for Melting of Hot-Applied Joint and Crack Sealant and Filler for Evaluation: Relevant for hot-applied membrane systems during analysis and sampling.
Other relevant specifications may include regional or national standards covering bridge construction, waterproofing, and materials quality assurance, ensuring comprehensive waterproofing solutions for bridge deck overlays.
