SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This test method provides a more precise way of measuring Gardner color than described in Test Method D1544. It is applicable to pine chemical products having colors from Gardner 1 to Gardner 18. The Gardner scale is not applicable to materials with colors lighter than 1 or darker than 18. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the quantitative determination of the color of clear, yellow/brown, liquid materials using color measuring instruments. The results may be invalid if other materials are used. The test uses the Gardner color scale described in Test Method D1544. This test method applies to pine chemical products including tall oil, tall oil fatty acids, rosin, and related products. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D6166-12(2022): Standard Test Method for Color of Pine Chemicals and Related Products (Instrumental Determination of Gardner Color) specifies a quantitative procedure to measure the color of clear, yellow, or brown liquid pine chemical products. This internationally recognized standard applies to items such as tall oil, tall oil fatty acids, and rosin, helping ensure consistent quality assessment in the pine chemicals industry using the Gardner color scale.
The test method is designed for use with color measuring instruments, providing enhanced precision in Gardner color determination compared to traditional visual methods as described in ASTM D1544. The method covers products within the Gardner 1 to Gardner 18 color range.
Key Topics
- Instrumental Color Measurement: Utilizes colorimeters or spectrophotometers capable of measuring transmitted color and outputting results directly as Gardner color values or in a convertible color system.
- Applicable Sample Range: Optimized for clear, yellow/brown, liquid pine chemicals-including tall oil, fatty acids, and rosin-within Gardner 1 to 18.
- Measurement Accuracy: Offers superior precision and repeatability versus manual test methods, supporting quality assurance and compliance.
- Sample Preparation: Outlines procedures for both liquid and solid samples, including guidance for safely preparing molten rosin for testing.
- Reporting Requirements: Results are to be presented in Gardner color units to one decimal place, with the testing conditions and any pre-treatment (such as filtration) noted.
- Safety and Compliance: Reminds users to establish and follow appropriate safety, health, and environmental measures before undertaking testing.
Applications
The ASTM D6166-12(2022) standard finds broad application throughout industries working with pine chemical products:
- Quality Control: Ensures color consistency in pine chemicals, which can be critical for further chemical processes or final product specifications.
- Regulatory Compliance: Facilitates compliance with buyer and regulatory standards by providing repeatable, objective Gardner color values.
- Research and Product Development: Supports formulation consistency and process optimization in product development and manufacturing environments.
- Supplier and Customer Communication: Offers a standardized, internationally accepted approach to reporting color in specifications and certificates of analysis.
Industries that benefit from ASTM D6166-12(2022) include chemical manufacturing, resin and adhesive production, and companies involved in pine processing and derivatives.
