SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This practice provides requirements for the handling, transportation, and storage of HFC-236fa encountered in distribution through both commercial and military channels. It is intended to ensure that HFC-236fa is handled, transported, and stored in such a way its physical properties are not degraded. Transport may be by various means, such as, but not limited to, highway, rail, water, and air. SCOPE 1.1 This practice covers guidance and direction to suppliers, purchasers, and users in the handling, transportation, and storage of HFC-236fa. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D6427-21 provides comprehensive guidance for the safe and effective handling, transportation, and storage of HFC-236fa (1,1,1,3,3,3-Hexafluoropropane, CF₃CH₂CF₃). As a halogenated hydrocarbon widely used as a fire suppressant and explosion hazard inerting agent, HFC-236fa requires careful management to preserve its physical integrity throughout commercial and military distribution channels. The standard supports quality, safety, and regulatory compliance across the entire supply chain by identifying essential requirements specific to HFC-236fa.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application: The standard applies to suppliers, purchasers, users, distributors, recyclers, and reclaimers involved in the lifecycle of HFC-236fa.
- Physical Integrity: Emphasizes maintaining the chemical and physical properties of HFC-236fa during all operations.
- Personnel Training: Requires that employees are trained per applicable Compressed Gas Association (CGA) publications and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
- Container Handling:
- Use of suitable, clean, and approved containers or cylinders.
- Prohibition of overfilling and stringent controls on transfer processes.
- Transportation:
- Shipment in accordance with DOT regulations for hazardous materials, specifically addressing packaging, vessel pressure, and labeling requirements.
- Suitable vehicle selection and protection of cylinders from vibration, temperature extremes, and physical shock.
- Storage Recommendations:
- Storing cylinders in environmentally protected, secure locations.
- Use of pressure relief devices and routine inspection to ensure continued compliance and integrity.
- Segregation and clear labeling, particularly when storing reclaimed or non-conforming materials.
- Inspection and Reclamation:
- Guidelines for testing and approving reclaimed HFC-236fa prior to reuse.
- Requirements for processing non-conforming product in an environmentally responsible manner.
Applications
HFC-236fa is critical in various sectors, especially for:
- Fire Suppression Systems: Used for inerting and suppressing fires or explosion hazards in sensitive environments.
- Aerospace and Defense: Employed in military vehicles, aircraft, and installations where reliable extinguishing agents are crucial.
- Industrial Safety: Deployed across manufacturing facilities and data centers requiring advanced fire protection.
Correct implementation of ASTM D6427-21 ensures:
- Safe Operations: Minimizing risks associated with compressed liquefied gases.
- Regulatory Compliance: Meeting CFR Title 49 and EPA regulatory mandates on hazardous materials.
- Product Quality: Maintaining the purity and efficiency of HFC-236fa throughout storage, handling, and transport.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive approach, ASTM D6427-21 should be used in conjunction with related standards and regulations, including:

- Environmental Protection Agency:
- 40 CFR Part 82.106 - Warning statement requirements for ozone-depleting substances.
Practical Value
By adhering to ASTM D6427-21, organizations benefit from:
- Enhanced workplace and environmental safety when handling hazardous refrigerants and fire suppressants.
- Consistent product performance through preservation of HFC-236fa purity.
- Efficient and compliant logistics for hazardous materials requiring multi-modal transportation.
- Reduction in liability and risk due to adherence to internationally recognized best practices for storage and movement of compressed gases.
Implementing this standard supports operational excellence and satisfies both industry and regulatory stakeholder expectations for the safe handling of HFC-236fa.
