SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This test method is used to determine if the turf reinforcement mat meets specifications for mass per unit area. This test method can be used for quality control to determine specimen conformance. This measurement allows for a simple control of the delivered material by a comparison of the mass per unit area of the delivered material and the specified mass per unit area. 5.2 The procedure in this test method may be used for acceptance testing of commercial shipments, but caution is advised since information about between-laboratory precision is incomplete. Comparative tests in accordance with 5.2.1 are advisable. 5.2.1 In case of a dispute arising from differences in reported test results when using the procedures in this test method for acceptance testing of commercial shipments, the purchaser and the manufacturer should conduct comparative tests to determine if there is a statistical bias between their laboratories. Competent statistical assistance is recommended for the investigation of bias. At a minimum, the two parties should take a group of test specimens that are as homogeneous as possible and which are from a lot of material of the type in question. The test specimen should then be randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory for testing. The average results from the two laboratories should be compared using the appropriate Student’s t-test and an acceptable probability level chosen by the two parties before testing is begun. If a bias is found, either its cause must be found and corrected or the purchaser and the manufacturer must agree to interpret future test results in light of the known bias. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers an index to the determination of mass per unit area of all turf reinforcement mats. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D6566-18(2023) is the internationally recognized standard test method for measuring the mass per unit area of turf reinforcement mats. Published by ASTM International and developed by ASTM Committee D35 on Geosynthetics, this standard provides a reliable approach to assess whether turf reinforcement mats comply with specified quality requirements. The method is central to quality control, acceptance testing, and material verification processes in construction and environmental projects involving erosion control and turf reinforcement.
Key Topics
-
Purpose and Scope: ASTM D6566-18(2023) applies to all types of turf reinforcement mats (TRMs). It specifies a process for determining the mass per unit area, a critical property in material specification and project compliance. The test is performed using SI units as the standard reference.
-
Test Method Summary:
- Test specimens are harvested from the full width and length of a material roll, ensuring representative sampling and omitting damaged or unrepresentative sections.
- Specimens are conditioned to defined temperature and humidity levels to achieve moisture equilibrium.
- Conditioned specimens are weighed using a calibrated balance with 0.01 g accuracy.
- Mass per unit area is calculated and averaged across all specimens from a laboratory sample.
-
Quality Control and Acceptance Testing: The mass per unit area measurement is fundamental for:
- Verifying delivered product matches specifications.
- Ensuring batch-to-batch consistency.
- Supporting dispute resolution by enabling side-by-side laboratory comparisons and the use of statistical analysis (Student’s t-test) in case of variability between different labs.
-
Precision and Bias: The standard provides guidance on repeatability and reproducibility, including the recommended procedure for inter-laboratory comparison and statistical assessment of possible bias.
-
Safety and Compliance: Users are responsible for establishing safe and environmentally compliant handling practices, as the standard does not specifically address all safety concerns.
Applications
ASTM D6566-18(2023) is crucial in various industries and project phases:
-
Erosion Control Engineering: Ensures turf reinforcement mats used in soil stabilization, slope protection, and channel lining meet mass requirements, which correlates with durability and performance.
-
Civil Construction: Confirms TRMs for landscaping, road embankments, or environmentally sensitive installations conform to contract documentation and technical specifications.
-
Quality Assurance and Procurement: Provides material suppliers, contractors, and regulators with a consistent, objective test method for incoming material verification, supplier evaluation, and inventory control.
-
Research and Product Development: Standardizes comparison in trials and new product qualification, supporting innovation in geosynthetics and erosion control technologies.
Related Standards
For comprehensive quality control and full compliance, ASTM D6566-18(2023) should be used in conjunction with related standards, such as:
- ASTM D123: Terminology Relating to Textiles
- ASTM D1776: Conditioning and Testing Textiles
- ASTM D4354: Sampling of Geosynthetics and Rolled Erosion Control Products
- ASTM D4439: Terminology for Geosynthetics
- ISO 9864: Mass per Unit Area of Geotextiles
Practical Value
By offering a standardized method for measuring turf reinforcement mat weight, ASTM D6566-18(2023) contributes to:
- Reliable quality control procedures
- Effective specification compliance
- Conflict resolution in supply chain management
- Enhanced durability and performance of erosion control solutions
When applied correctly, this standard ensures project stakeholders can trust their turf reinforcement materials meet stringent functional and regulatory requirements.
