ABSTRACT This specification covers a liquid-applied solvent dispersed elastomeric coating used as a roofing membrane for spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation whose principal polymer in the dispersion contains more than 95 % silicone. The product, as manufactured, shall be in liquid form for application to SPF surfaces by brushing, squeegeeing, rolling, or spraying. The product shall be composed of dispersion containing as the principal polymer more than 95 % silicone polymers to which various pigments and other additives have been added to give the required physical properties. Liquid properties like viscosity, volume solids, and weight solids shall be determined after conducting different tests. Physical properties of cured silicone coating like elongation, tensile strength, permeance, accelerated weathering, adhesion, tear resistance, and low-temperature flexibility shall be determined after a series of tests. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers a liquid-applied solvent dispersed elastomeric coating used as a roofing membrane for spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation whose principal polymer in the dispersion contains more than 95 % silicone. 1.2 This specification does not provide guidance for application. 1.3 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portions, Sections 5 and 6. 1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D6694/D6694M-15(2023) is the international standard specification for liquid-applied, solvent-dispersed, elastomeric silicone coatings used as roofing membranes on spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation. Developed by ASTM Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, this specification ensures that silicone coatings possess the necessary properties to perform as protective, durable roofing membranes. These coatings must primarily consist of silicone polymers (over 95%), enabling superior weather resistance, flexibility, and adhesion when applied to SPF roofing systems.
Key Topics
- Product Composition: The standard requires the silicone coating to be in a liquid form when manufactured, primarily composed of more than 95% silicone polymers, with additional pigments and additives for optimal performance.
- Application Methods: Designed for ease of use, these liquid-applied silicone coatings can be applied to SPF surfaces by brushing, squeegeeing, rolling, or spraying. The standard itself does not provide guidance for the application process.
- Performance Testing:
- Liquid Properties: Viscosity, volume solids, and weight solids are established per referenced ASTM test methods.
- Physical Properties After Curing: Elongation, tensile strength, permeance, accelerated weathering resistance, adhesion, tear resistance, and low-temperature flexibility are measured to ensure durability and effectiveness.
- International Consistency: The standard is developed according to globally recognized principles and offers requirements in both SI and inch-pound units.
Applications
Liquid-applied silicone coatings covered by ASTM D6694/D6694M-15(2023) are vital in commercial and industrial roofing applications, especially for SPF roofing systems. Main benefits and practices include:
- Roof Protection: These coatings provide a seamless, waterproof membrane over SPF insulation, protecting against water intrusion, UV radiation, and weathering.
- Durability and Flexibility: Stringent testing ensures that the cured film maintains performance under harsh environmental conditions, including large temperature variations and mechanical stress.
- Ease of Installation: The liquid nature allows for quick and even application over complex rooftop geometries, minimizing seams and potential leak points.
- Sustainable Roofing Solutions: Silicone coatings can extend the service life of SPF roofs, reducing the need for tear-off or full replacement, contributing to greener building maintenance strategies.
