SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 2.1 This test method is generally accepted for the preparation of floor polish and floor polish polymers for the analysis of total zinc content. Knowing the total zinc content of a floor finish or polymer can aid in determining the proper disposal method of used or unwanted product. SCOPE 1.1 This laboratory test method covers the analysis of floor polishes and floor polish polymers for total zinc content. 1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D6827-02(2023) is the internationally recognized standard test method for determining the total zinc content in floor polishes and floor polish polymers using Flame Atomic Absorption (A.A.). Developed by ASTM International, this method ensures accurate preparation and analysis of both soluble and insoluble zinc, providing critical information for product characterization and regulatory compliance. Understanding zinc content is particularly significant for the correct disposal of used or unwanted floor finishes and polymers, supporting environmental safety and responsible product stewardship.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Application
- This test method applies to a wide range of floor polishes and floor polish polymer products.
- The procedure encompasses both sample preparation and the measurement of total zinc, not just the soluble fraction.
-
Significance & Use
- Identifies the total zinc content, aiding in waste management and compliance with environmental regulations.
- Supports manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and laboratories with a standardized approach to zinc analysis.
-
Methodology Highlights
- Utilizes Flame Atomic Absorption (A.A.) spectrometry as the analytical technique.
- Includes requirements for careful sample preparation to ensure all zinc, including insoluble forms, is measured.
- Details critical steps such as acid digestion, filtration, and analysis calibration.
-
Safety and Compliance
- Emphasizes the user’s responsibility to address all relevant safety, health, and environmental considerations.
- Developed under internationally recognized standards principles, aligning with global trade and regulatory expectations.
Applications
The ASTM D6827-02(2023) standard plays a vital role for industries and laboratories involved with:
-
Floor Polish Manufacturing
- Assures product consistency and quality control through accurate zinc measurement.
- Supports the development of safer, environmentally compliant products.
-
Environmental Compliance
- Ensures responsible floor polish disposal by identifying potential heavy metal hazards.
- Assists in meeting regulatory obligations for environmental safety and hazardous waste classification.
-
Research and Development
- Provides a reproducible method for studying the impact of zinc-containing additives.
- Facilitates the optimization of polymer formulations for performance and regulatory adherence.
-
Third-party Laboratories
- Offers an international benchmark for reliable contract testing and cross-laboratory validation.
Related Standards
