SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 The retention of an excessive amount of particles on the sieve indicates that problems may occur in handling and application of the material. Particles of asphalt retained on the sieve are often caused by agglomeration of the dispersed phase. Storage, pumping, handling, and temperature can all contribute to the formation of particles. Contamination from the tank, transport, or hose are other factors affecting particle formation. Note 1: The quality of the results produced by this standard are dependent on the competence of the personnel performing the procedure and the capability, calibration, and maintenance of the equipment used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Specification D3666 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing, sampling, inspection, etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Specification D3666 alone does not completely ensure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; following the suggestions of Specification D3666 or some similar acceptable guideline provides a means of evaluating and controlling some of those factors. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the degree to which an emulsified asphalt may contain particles of asphalt or other discreet solids retained on a 850-μm mesh sieve. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D6933-22: Standard Test Method for Oversized Particles in Emulsified Asphalts (Sieve Test) is an internationally recognized method developed by ASTM International. This standard provides a defined procedure to determine the proportion of oversized particles, such as asphalt agglomerates or discrete solids, that are retained on an 850-μm mesh sieve in emulsified asphalts. Monitoring oversized particles in asphalt emulsions is critical because excessive particles may impede the material’s handling and application performance during storage, transport, and construction processes.
This test method establishes standardized practices to assess material consistency and quality, contributing to the reliable use of emulsified asphalts in road construction and maintenance.
Key Topics
-
Significance and Use:
- Identifies issues caused by excessive oversized particles, which can occur due to agglomeration, inadequate material handling, temperature, or contamination during transport and storage.
- Provides an early indicator of potential problems in material performance, such as clogging of equipment or poor surface finish.
-
Test Method Scope:
- Applies to all emulsified asphalts, both cationic and anionic, that are subjected to particle size retention testing.
- The procedure measures particles retained on a standard 850-μm sieve, using measurements exclusively in SI units.
-
Quality and Reliability:
- Stresses the importance of both operator competence and equipment calibration for accurate and repeatable results.
- Agencies following ASTM D3666 are viewed as capable of performing competent testing and inspection, but additional quality assurance measures are recommended for consistent outcomes.
-
Safety Considerations:
- Users are responsible for complying with safety, health, and environmental regulations relevant to the standard’s application.
Applications
The ASTM D6933-22 test method is primarily used for:
-
Quality Control in Asphalt Production:
- Ensures emulsified asphalt products are free of problematic oversized particles before shipment or application.
- Helps producers meet client or project specifications for material quality.
-
Construction and Road Maintenance:
- Assists in verifying the suitability of emulsified asphalts for use in paving, sealing, and surface treatment operations.
- Prevents issues such as equipment blockages, uneven application, or premature failure.
-
Material Evaluation in Laboratories:
- Used by third-party testing labs to provide independent verification of asphalt emulsion quality.
- Supports research and development of new or modified emulsified asphalt formulations.
Related Standards
Several related ASTM standards support or complement the application of ASTM D6933-22, including:
- ASTM D3666: Minimum requirements for agencies inspecting and testing road and paving materials, ensuring testing competency and objectivity.
- ASTM D7496: Test method for measuring the viscosity of emulsified asphalts, relevant for determining appropriate test temperatures.
- ASTM E1: Specification for liquid-in-glass thermometers used during sample conditioning.
- ASTM E11: Specification for woven wire test sieve cloth and test sieves, ensuring sieve consistency and reliability.
By following ASTM D6933-22, organizations ensure emulsified asphalts are consistently evaluated for oversized particles, promoting quality control and reliable field performance. Proper adherence to this standard reduces operational issues during storage, transportation, and application, supporting durable road construction and maintenance practices. For those involved in asphalt production, testing, or construction, this standard is an essential resource for maintaining high quality and regulatory compliance.
