SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This test method can be used to determine total sulfur levels in process feeds and finished products that fall within the scope of this test method. 4.2 Low levels of sulfur in process feed stocks can poison expensive catalysts used in petroleum refining processes. This test method can be used to monitor sulfur levels in these feedstocks. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of total sulfur in liquid hydrocarbons with a final boiling point less than 450 °C by gas chromatography using a flame photometric detector. 1.2 This test method is applicable for total sulfur levels from 0.5 mg/kg S to 100 mg/kg S. Note 1: The pooled limit of quantification (PLOQ) derived from the 2002 interlaboratory cooperative test program was determined to be 1 mg/kg S. Note 2: Samples can also be tested at other total sulfur levels, but the precision statements may not apply. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard statements see Section 7. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D7041-16(2021) is the internationally recognized standard test method for determining total sulfur content in liquid hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-oxygenate blends. This method utilizes gas chromatography with flame photometric detection (GC-FPD) to precisely measure sulfur concentrations in samples with a final boiling point below 450 °C. The standard is essential for quality control in petroleum refining, helping to protect expensive catalysts and ensure compliance with environmental regulations pertaining to sulfur emissions.
The test is applicable to sulfur concentration ranges from 0.5 mg/kg S to 100 mg/kg S, providing a reliable measurement tool for various petroleum-based materials.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
- Suitable for liquid hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-oxygenate blends with a final boiling point less than 450 °C.
- Measures total sulfur levels in the range of 0.5 to 100 mg/kg S.
- Results are reported in SI units.
-
Significance and Use
- Early detection of sulfur in feedstocks to prevent catalyst poisoning in refining operations.
- Enables ongoing monitoring of sulfur in process feeds and finished products.
-
Testing Principle
- A fixed sample is vaporized and oxidized in a GC-FPD system.
- Sulfur-containing compounds are converted to sulfur dioxide, separated via chromatography, and detected by flame photometric detectors.
- Calibration using known external standards facilitates accurate quantification.
-
Precision and Reporting
- The method supports consistent, reproducible results for both gasoline and diesel samples.
- Results are typically reported to the nearest 0.1 mg/kg S.
Applications
Petroleum Refining and Processing
- Monitoring sulfur content is critical to safeguard refining catalysts and optimize process efficiency.
- Provides essential data for blending operations and compliance with regulations.
Quality Control and Product Certification
- Supports quality management by verifying sulfur specifications in finished fuel products such as gasoline and diesel.
- Essential for certifying products before market release or export.
Environmental Compliance
- Ensures that fuel sulfur levels meet limits set by environmental authorities for air quality and emissions reduction.
Research and Development
- Used in laboratory settings for product development and process optimization where sulfur content is a key variable.
