ABSTRACT This specification covers requirements for plasticized cellulose acetate butyrate thermoplastic compounds suitable for injection molding and extrusion. These compounds have a butyryl content less than 38 % and an acetyl content less than 15 % and may or may not contain dyes and pigments. This specification does not include special materials compounded for special applications. Cellulosic plastic materials, being thermoplastic, are reprocessable and recyclable. This specification allows for the use of those cellulosic materials, provided that all specific requirements of this specification are met. Test specimens of the thermoplastic compounds shall conform to the prescribed specific gravity, tensile stress at yield, flexural modulus, Izod impact strength, water absorption and weight loss on heating. The materials shall also be subject to color-visual, color-quantitative, and plasticizer content analysis. SCOPE 1.1 This classification system covers requirements for plasticized cellulose acetate butyrate thermoplastic compounds suitable for injection molding and extrusion. These compounds have a butyryl content less than 38 % and an acetyl content less than 15 % and can contain dyes and pigments. This classification system does not include special materials compounded for special applications. Cellulosic plastic materials, being thermoplastic, are reprocessable and recyclable. This classification system allows for the use of those cellulosic materials, provided that all specific requirements of this classification system are met. 1.2 The properties included in this classification system are those required to identify the compositions covered. Other requirements necessary to identify particular characteristics important to specialized applications are specified by using the suffixes as given in Section 5. 1.3 This classification system and subsequent line call out (specification) are intended to provide a means of calling out plastic materials used in the fabrication of end items or parts. It is not intended for the selection of materials. Material selection can be made by those having expertise in the plastic field only after careful consideration of the design and performance required of the part, environment to which it will be exposed, fabrication process to be employed, costs involved, and inherent properties of the material other than those covered by this classification system. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.5 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 12, of this classification system. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Note 1: There is no known ISO equivalent to this standard. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D707-15(2023) is the international standard developed by ASTM International for the classification and specification of cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) molding and extrusion compounds. This standard covers the essential requirements for plasticized CAB thermoplastic materials used in injection molding and extrusion processes. These compounds are characterized by a butyryl content below 38% and an acetyl content below 15%. The standard facilitates the identification, call-out, and quality assurance of CAB compounds used in manufacturing, ensuring consistency in performance across applications.
CAB materials are valued for their recyclability and thermoplastic nature, making them suitable for various industrial applications. The standard defines property requirements such as specific gravity, tensile strength, flexural modulus, impact strength, water absorption, and thermal stability, which CAB materials must meet to be classified under ASTM D707.
Key Topics
- Classification System: Defines groups based on impact or tensile strength, classes by plasticizer content, and grades for application (injection molding or extrusion).
- Specification Requirements: Outlines key physical and chemical properties including:
- Specific gravity
- Tensile stress at yield
- Flexural modulus
- Izod impact strength
- Water absorption
- Weight loss on heating
- Color/opacity and plasticizer content
- Test Methods: References relevant ASTM test methods for verifying compliance:
- D638 (Tensile properties)
- D790 (Flexural properties)
- D256 (Izod impact resistance)
- D792 (Density/specific gravity)
- D570 (Water absorption)
- D149 and D257 (Electrical properties, if required)
- Reprocessability and Recycling: Emphasis on use of recycled CAB materials provided they comply with all specification requirements.
- Sampling and Certification: Guidance on lot acceptance, inspection, and reporting procedures to ensure product traceability and quality.
Applications
CAB molding and extrusion compounds are widely used across industries for their balanced performance, optical clarity, and versatility. Typical applications include:
- Automotive Parts: Interior trim and instrument panels utilizing CAB’s impact and weathering resistance.
- Consumer Goods: Tool handles, spectacle frames, and housings for electronic devices, benefiting from CAB’s moldability and surface finish.
- Packaging and Films: Use in specialty packaging where clarity and chemical resistance are required.
- Building and Construction: Wall coverings, trims, and profiles, thanks to durability and customization options with pigments and dyes.
- Electrical Insulation: Certain grades offer suitable dielectric properties for non-conductive applications.
By adhering to ASTM D707-15(2023), manufacturers and end-users benefit from standardized material classification, reliable processing guidance, and enhanced reproducibility in finished products.
