ABSTRACT This specification addresses the physical properties of melt processible molding and extrusion materials of EFEP-fluoropolymer, wherein the EFEP resin is a copolymer of ethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, and hexafluoropropylene. It does not cover blended and recycled materials. Covered here are two types of fluoropolymer that is supplied in pellet form and classified according to their melting points, while the resins of each type are divided into one to two grades in accordance with their melt flow rates. The materials shall be sampled in accordance with an adequate statistical sampling procedure and shall conform to specific gravity, melting point, melt flow rate, elongation, tensile strength, and dielectric constant and dissipation factor requirements when tested by the procedures itemized herein. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers melt processible molding and extrusion materials of EFEP-fluoropolymer. The EFEP resin is a copolymer of ethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, and hexafluoropropylene. 1.2 This specification does not cover blended materials and does not cover recycled materials. 1.3 The values stated in SI units as detailed in IEEE/ASTM SI-10 are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.4 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 11, of this specification. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Note 1: Although this specification and ISO 20568-1 and ISO 20568-2 differ in approach or detail, data obtained using either are technically equivalent. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D7472-19(2024), Standard Specification for EFEP-Fluoropolymer Molding and Extrusion Materials, provides a comprehensive specification for melt processible materials made from EFEP-fluoropolymer. EFEP is a copolymer containing ethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, and hexafluoropropylene, delivered in pellet form and specifically intended for molding and extrusion applications. This standard details key classification parameters, requirements for material uniformity, and test methods for confirming physical and electrical properties. Blended or recycled materials are specifically excluded from its scope, ensuring consistency and high performance in end-use applications.
Key Topics
- Material Classification: EFEP materials are categorized into two types based on melting points, with each further subdivided into grades defined by melt flow rates.
- Physical Properties Requirements:
- Specific gravity: Aligns with established industry ranges.
- Melting point: Set limits for reliable processing.
- Melt flow rate: Determines suitability for molding or extruding processes.
- Tensile strength and elongation: Ensures mechanical durability of finished products.
- Electrical Properties:
- Dielectric constant and dissipation factor: Confirmed per ASTM D150 for insulation performance.
- Sampling and Testing: Materials must be sampled using a statistical procedure to ensure lot uniformity and tested using referenced ASTM test methods, including ASTM D792 (specific gravity), D1238 (melt flow rate), D638 (tensile properties), and D3418 (thermal analysis).
- Packaging & Marking: Specifies commercial packaging standards and clear labeling of material type, grade, and quantity.
Applications
EFEP-fluoropolymer materials specified by ASTM D7472-19(2024) are valued for their balanced physical and electrical properties, chemical resistance, and processability. Key application areas include:
- Wire and Cable Insulation: Owing to their stable dielectric characteristics, EFEP-fluoropolymers are extensively used for insulating electrical wires and components.
- Industrial Linings and Tubing: Chemical resistance and processability make these materials suitable for fluid handling systems and protective linings.
- Automotive and Aerospace Components: High-performance EFEP grades are chosen for parts requiring durability, flexibility, and consistent electrical properties.
- Electronic Devices: Used as a molding and extrusion material for connectors, housings, and other electronic packaging requiring precise dielectric performance.
- Medical and Analytical Equipment: Stability, cleanliness, and processing consistency support use in sensitive applications.
Manufacturers, material specifiers, and quality control professionals benefit by using ASTM D7472-19(2024) to ensure EFEP-fluoropolymer materials meet defined mechanical and electrical property requirements for reliable product performance.
Related Standards
When working with EFEP-fluoropolymer molding and extrusion materials, the following related standards are often referenced in conjunction to ensure comprehensive quality assurance:
