SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 Knowledge of an approved method is required to establish whether the product meets the requirements of its specifications. The use of glycols in the reference sample is not intended to suggest the presence of glycol (EG, PG and DPG) impurities, but to demonstrate and quantify the separation of commonly used Engine Coolant glycols from PDO. SCOPE 1.1 This test method describes the gas chromatographic determination of purity for 1,3-propanediol (PDO). This test method was originally developed to determine the purity of 1,3-propanediol used for the application as the freeze point depressant base fluid in formulated PDO engine coolants. Use of the method for purity of PDO for other applications may be viable. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.2.1 Exception—Inch-pound units (psi) are used in Table 1, Pressure Program, Options A and B. 1.3 Review the current Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for detailed information concerning toxicity, first aid procedures, and safety precautions. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D7515-19(2023) is an international standard developed by ASTM International that establishes a test method for determining the purity of 1,3-propanediol (PDO) using gas chromatography. Originally created to ensure the quality of PDO used as a freeze point depressant in engine coolant base fluids, this method is applicable for a broad range of production and quality control contexts where highly pure 1,3-propanediol is required. Understanding and applying this standard ensures accurate product specification compliance and reliable, reproducible results across laboratories.
Key Topics
- Gas Chromatographic Purity Determination: The standard outlines a temperature-programmed gas chromatographic process using capillary columns and flame ionization detection (FID) to quantify 1,3-propanediol purity.
- Performance Checks and Reference Samples: The protocol emphasizes using reference samples containing ethylene glycol (EG), propylene glycol (PG), and dipropylene glycol (DPG) to verify the separation of PDO from possible glycol contaminants.
- Precision and Quality Assurance: ASTM D7515 highlights method validation, including precision (repeatability and reproducibility) to ensure reliability of results.
- Safety and Compliance: The standard instructs users to review relevant Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and to establish proper safety, health, and environmental practices when handling chemicals involved in the test method.
- International Standardization: Developed in line with the World Trade Organization’s TBT Committee guidelines, this standard is widely recognized and accepted for international trade and quality assessment.
Applications
- Engine Coolant Manufacturing: Key in verifying the purity of 1,3-propanediol as a principal ingredient in freeze point depressant fluids for engine coolant formulations.
- Quality Control in Chemical Production: Provides producers and users of 1,3-propanediol with a validated method to confirm material purity and rule out glycol impurities, ensuring compliance with stringent product specifications.
- Research and Development: Useful in laboratories and R&D facilities developing new applications for PDO in polymers, solvents, or specialty chemicals, where purity is critical to end-use performance.
- Regulatory and Commercial Supply Chains: Supports regulatory submissions and commercial contracts by documenting an approved, widely recognized test method for 1,3-propanediol quality assessment.

Practical Value
Adhering to ASTM D7515-19(2023) ensures accurate, repeatable, and internationally recognized evaluation of 1,3-propanediol purity. This prevents potential product failures related to contamination and supports compliance with industry and regulatory requirements. With its focus on gas chromatographic methods, the standard is suitable for both routine quality control and research settings, streamlining laboratory operations and giving buyers and regulatory bodies confidence in product specifications.
