SCOPE 1.1 This specification describes the required properties and test methods for a one or two-component, cold liquid-applied elastomeric-type membrane comprised of silyl-terminated polyether polymer, silyl-terminated polyurethane polymer, or a blend of the two polymers for waterproofing building decks and walls subjected to hydrostatic pressure in building areas to be occupied by personnel, vehicles, or equipment. This specification applies only to a membrane system that will be covered with a separate wearing course, traffic course, or backfill. Note 1: See Guides C898/C898M and C1471/C1471M for proper application of membrane. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D8463/D8463M-23 is the international standard specification for high solids content, cold liquid-applied elastomeric waterproofing membranes based on silyl-terminated polymer chemistry. These membranes are designed for waterproofing building decks and walls subject to hydrostatic pressure in structures intended for occupancy by personnel, vehicles, or equipment. This standard is applicable only when the waterproofing membrane is covered by a separate wearing course, traffic course, or backfill to protect the membrane from direct wear and exposure.
This ASTM waterproofing standard details the physical and performance requirements for both one-component and two-component silyl-terminated polyether or polyurethane-based membrane systems. It ensures consistent quality, durability, and effectiveness in critical waterproofing applications under demanding conditions.
Key Topics
- Material Types: Specifies two types of membranes:
- Type I: One-component, ready-to-use membrane, curing without an accelerator but allowing for optional expedited curing.
- Type II: Two-component system, requiring mixing prior to application.
- Material Composition: Defines requirements for silyl-terminated polyether, silyl-terminated polyurethane, or blends as the principal polymer, plus additives for the desired performance.
- Physical Properties: Mandates tests for:
- Hardness
- Weight loss (before and after burial)
- Crack bridging at low temperatures
- Peel adhesion (standard and "green" mortar)
- Extensibility after heat aging
- Permeance, flexibility, and cure properties at low and standard temperatures
- Hydrostatic pressure resistance
- Test Methods: References multiple ASTM methods for standardized testing and specimen preparation, including adhesion-in-peel, extensibility, hardness, and others.
- Application Requirements: Membranes must be applied to substrates using brush, roller, squeegee, or spray and are to be used only with a proper covering course for protection and functionality.
Applications
ASTM D8463/D8463M-23 is widely used in the construction and building materials industries for:
- Deck and Wall Waterproofing: Used beneath concrete or other protective courses on building decks, plazas, parking structures, and below-grade foundation walls.
- Hydrostatic Pressure Environments: Ideal for areas where waterproofing membranes must withstand prolonged exposure to water under pressure, such as basements and submerged structural areas.
- Protective Membrane Layer: In situations requiring a seamless, flexible, and robust barrier beneath a separate traffic or wearing course to prevent water ingress and structural damage.
- New and Existing Construction: Suitable for both new installations and refurbishment projects where reliable waterproofing performance is essential.
Related Standards
To support proper selection, installation, and quality control, ASTM D8463/D8463M-23 relates to several other ASTM and industry standards, including:
- ASTM C836/C836M: Specification for high solids content, cold liquid-applied elastomeric waterproofing membrane.
- ASTM C898/C898M: Guide for using high solids content, cold liquid-applied elastomeric waterproofing membranes.
- ASTM C1471/C1471M: Guide for using waterproofing membranes on vertical surfaces.
- ASTM D5385/D5385M: Test method for hydrostatic pressure resistance of waterproofing membranes.
- ASTM D2240: Test method for measuring hardness of rubber and elastomeric materials.
- ASTM D1079: Terminology related to roofing and waterproofing.
Conclusion
ASTM D8463/D8463M-23 is a critical standard for ensuring the quality, durability, and performance of high solids content, cold liquid-applied elastomeric waterproofing membranes utilizing silyl-terminated polymers. Adhering to this specification helps protect structural elements from water ingress, extend asset service life, and ensure compliance with international building standards for waterproofing applications. For optimal results, always reference related guides and test methods, and ensure the membrane is applied and covered as specified.
