SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This test method provides a more precise way of measuring Gardner color than described in Test Method D1544. It is applicable to rosin products having colors from Gardner 1 to Gardner 18. The Gardner scale is not applicable to materials with colors lighter than 1 or darker than 18. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the quantitative determination of the color of clear, yellow/brown, liquid materials using color measuring instruments. The results may be invalid if other materials are used. The test uses the Gardner color scale described in Test Method D1544. This test method applies to pine chemical products including tall oil rosin, gum rosin, wood rosin and related products. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D8515-23 is the industry standard method for the instrumental determination of Gardner color in rosin solutions. Developed by ASTM International, this test method provides a precise quantitative approach to measuring the color of clear, yellow, or brown liquid pine chemical products, including tall oil rosin, gum rosin, wood rosin, and related materials. The method uses color-measuring instruments to determine Gardner color values within the scale of Gardner 1 to Gardner 18, making it a reliable tool for quality control and specification in the pine chemicals sector.
Key Topics
- Instrumental Gardner Color Measurement: This standard utilizes color instruments capable of measuring transmitted color and reporting results in Gardner color units or compatible color systems, such as those convertible from tristimulus values or chromaticity coordinates.
- Applicability: Suitable for rosin products and derivatives with colors ranging from Gardner 1 to 18. It is not designed for materials lighter or darker than this range.
- Sample Preparation: Rosin samples, often solid, are dissolved in toluene to prepare a homogeneous solution for measurement. Both molten and solid preparation methods are addressed.
- Calibration and Testing: The procedure includes guidance on calibrating instruments per manufacturer instructions and emphasizes the importance of duplicate measurements for accuracy.
- Reporting: Results are documented to a tenth of a Gardner color unit, ensuring high precision in color grading for industrial needs.
- Safety and Compliance: Users are responsible for establishing safe practices and ensuring adherence to local regulatory requirements when implementing the test.
Applications
ASTM D8515-23 serves several practical functions in the pine chemicals industry and related fields:
- Quality Control: Ensures consistent color standards in tall oil rosin, gum rosin, and wood rosin products by enabling precise, repeatable color measurements.
- Product Specification: Helps manufacturers and suppliers certify that their products meet contractual and regulatory color specifications.
- Research and Development: Supports formulation, development, and improvement of rosin-containing products by providing accurate color characterization tools.
- Supply Chain Verification: Provides an objective method for buyers and sellers to verify the color quality of incoming or outgoing rosin batches.
Related Standards
For comprehensive color measurement and to ensure harmonized results, the following ASTM standards are referenced or complementary to ASTM D8515-23:
- ASTM D1544 - Test Method for Color of Transparent Liquids (Gardner Color Scale): The foundational method used for manual/visual Gardner color assessments.
- ASTM E308 - Practice for Computing the Colors of Objects by Using the CIE System: Provides procedures for color computation when instruments report in tristimulus values or chromaticity coordinates.
