ABSTRACT This specification provides the standard appearance, capacity, design, and dimensional requirements for eight types of multiple neck distilling/boiling glass flasks for laboratory use. Flasks, which shall be made of borosilicate glass conforming to specified maximum residual thermal stresses, are available in the following types: Type I, standard taper necks of equal height; Type II, three tooled necks of unequal height; Type III, three standard taper necks of unequal height; Type IV, three standard taper necks of equal height; Type V, three tooled necks that are angled; Type VI, three standard taper necks that are angled; Type VII, two standard taper necks of unequal height; and Type VIII, two standard taper necks that are angled. SCOPE 1.1 This specification provides standard dimensional requirements for multiple neck distilling/boiling flasks. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM E1378-99(2022) - Standard Specification for Laboratory Glass Multiple Neck Distilling/Boiling Flasks defines the essential requirements for glass flasks used in laboratory distilling and boiling applications. This standard, developed by ASTM International, specifies appearance, capacity, design, and dimensional requirements for eight types of multiple neck distilling/boiling flasks made from borosilicate glass. Compliance with this specification ensures uniformity, quality, and compatibility in laboratory apparatus, supporting safe and effective scientific operations.
The flasks outlined in ASTM E1378-99(2022) are designed for chemical and research laboratories, tailored to processes demanding precise handling and manipulation of substances under controlled conditions.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Establishes dimensional and material standards for laboratory glass flasks with multiple necks, available in various configurations and capacities-all in SI units.
- Flask Types: Eight distinct types are covered, differentiated by neck number, position (angled, standard, tooled), and neck height (equal or unequal).
- Materials: Mandates borosilicate glass for enhanced chemical resistance and durability, conforming to ASTM E438.
- Thermal Stress Resistance: Residual thermal stress must comply with ASTM E671, ensuring flask integrity during heating and cooling cycles.
- Design and Appearance: Spherical-bodied flasks with standardized neck finishes-beaded, tooled, or standard taper-meeting the requirements of ASTM E676.
- Capacity and Dimensions: Nominal capacities ranging from 25 mL to 12,000 mL; minimum wall thickness requirements are specified for each flask size.
- Markings: Each flask must bear a permanent mark for manufacturer identification, nominal capacity, and, where applicable, the joint size, facilitating traceability and correct use.
- Packaging and Sampling: Refers to additional ASTM standards (E920, E921, E1133, E1157) to ensure consistent packaging quality and sampling practices.
Applications
Laboratory glass multiple neck distilling/boiling flasks specified by ASTM E1378-99(2022) are essential in:
- Distillation and Boiling Procedures: Ideal for chemical separation, purification, and synthesis processes requiring simultaneous access through multiple necks for adding reagents, inserting measuring devices, or connecting condensers.
- Chemical Research and Analysis: Multi-neck configurations allow complex experimental setups such as titration, refluxing, and controlled atmosphere reactions.
- Industrial Laboratories: Used in pharmaceutical, environmental, and materials science labs where adherence to global standards for laboratory glassware promotes reproducibility and safety.
- Educational Laboratories: Facilitates hands-on learning experiences in advanced chemistry classes by providing reliable and standardized apparatus.
