SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This practice is intended for use by the material specifier, general contractor, applicator, or any individual group requiring information regarding the application of SFRM. 5.2 This practice is not intended to replace the manufacturers' application instructions. SCOPE 1.1 This practice covers guidelines for application of sprayed fiber and cementitious fire-resistive materials. 1.2 This practice is general in nature. It is not intended to cover all requirements for application. 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific precautionary statements are given in Section 10 and 14.1.2. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM E1513/E1513M-93(2023): Standard Practice for Application of Sprayed Fire-Resistive Materials (SFRMs) provides comprehensive guidelines covering the application of both sprayed fiber and cementitious fire-resistive materials. Developed by ASTM International, this standard is essential for professionals involved in specifying, applying, or inspecting SFRMs within building and construction projects. While general in nature, the standard supports the consistent and safe installation of SFRMs to enhance the fire resistance of structural elements. Adherence to this guidance helps ensure compliance with national and international fire protection requirements, while also maintaining alignment with manufacturer instructions and local building codes.
Key Topics
- Applicability: The standard is intended for use by material specifiers, general contractors, applicators, and any professional needing guidance on the proper application of SFRMs. However, it does not supersede manufacturers’ application instructions.
- Scope of Application: Offers guidance for application processes concerning sprayed fiber and cementitious materials used in fireproofing structural substrates.
- Units of Measurement: Provides requirements in both SI and inch-pound units, which should be used independently and not combined.
- Material Handling: Describes proper storage, labeling, usage within shelf life, and moisture protection for SFRM products before application.
- Application Environment: Recommends suitable temperatures, ventilation, and substrate preparation standards to ensure optimal bonding and curing.
- Safety Practices: Emphasizes compliance with OSHA and applicable safety standards, including the use of protective equipment and safe operation of application machinery.
- Inspection and Testing: Requires independent laboratory inspection for thickness, density, and cohesion/adhesion following established ASTM test methods after SFRM application.
- Coordination and Protection: Stresses the need for coordinating application with other trades, substrate masking, and protecting SFRMs during curing to prevent damage.
Applications
The guidelines outlined in ASTM E1513/E1513M-93(2023) are widely adopted throughout the construction industry for fire protection of building structural members. Some practical applications include:
- Commercial Buildings: Applying SFRMs to steel beams, columns, and decking to meet fire-resistance ratings required by building codes.
- Industrial Facilities: Fireproofing critical infrastructure, such as power plants or manufacturing sites, where enhanced fire resistance is vital.
- Renovation and Retrofits: Ensuring fire protection compliance for existing structures undergoing upgrades or changes in occupancy.
- New Construction: Coordinating fire-resistive coatings as part of the overall building envelope, ensuring compatibility with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other systems.
By following this standard, construction teams help ensure that materials are properly specified, applied, and verified, safeguarding both property and lives against fire hazards. The standard’s procedures help minimize risk during application, protect the integrity of installed SFRMs, and support regulatory compliance across a variety of project types.
Related Standards
The proper application and inspection of SFRMs are closely associated with several other industry standards. Key referenced documents within ASTM E1513/E1513M-93(2023) include:
- ASTM E119: Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials
- ASTM E605/E605M: Test Methods for Thickness and Density of Sprayed Fire-Resistive Material Applied to Structural Members
- ASTM E631: Terminology of Building Constructions
- ASTM E736/E736M: Test Method for Cohesion/Adhesion of Sprayed Fire-Resistive Materials
- ASTM E759/E759M: Test Method for Effect of Deflection on Sprayed Fire-Resistive Material
- ASTM E760/E760M: Test Method for Effect of Impact on Bonding of Sprayed Fire-Resistive Material
- ASTM E1368: Practice for Visual Inspection of Asbestos Abatement Projects
For those responsible for fire-resistive material application, familiarity with these standards-in addition to ASTM E1513/E1513M-is critical to ensuring best practices and ongoing compliance with current fire safety codes and regulations.
