SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This test method may be used by producers, users, and general interest parties for research and development or production quality control work, and is useful for the comparison of test sieves. 4.2 Because the reference material’s particle size distribution will affect the acceptance tolerance, the user should determine an acceptance tolerance based on their specific reference material. SCOPE 1.1 This test method is a performance test for acceptance of test sieves. 1.2 This test method compares the performance of an E11 test sieve against an inspection or calibration test sieve using a known quantity of reference material such that the long-term stability of test sieves can be measured. 1.3 This is a test method for checking the accuracy and long-term reliability of test sieves. Since it is not possible to adjust the measuring capability of a test sieve, the test method is designed to offer a verification procedure based on sieving performance by comparison to a standard reference. This test method is not proposed as an alternative to the inspection methods in accordance with Specification E11 or the procedures in MNL 32. 1.4 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The additional values given are included for information only and are not considered standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM E2427-22: Standard Test Method for Acceptance by Performance Testing for Test Sieves provides a standardized procedure to evaluate and accept test sieves based on performance testing. Developed by ASTM International, this method is essential for ensuring the accuracy, repeatability, and long-term reliability of test sieves used in particle size analysis and material quality control. The test method compares an E11 test sieve’s performance against a certified inspection or calibration sieve using a specific reference material. ASTM E2427-22 helps producers, manufacturers, and laboratories verify that their sieves continue to provide consistent results throughout their service life, supporting both research and production environments.
Key Topics
- Performance-Based Testing: Outlines a procedure for assessing test sieves by comparing their sieving results to a reference or calibration sieve using a standardized reference material.
- Acceptance Criteria: Describes how to assess the percent deviation between a test sieve and a reference sieve, with a guideline that acceptable deviation should typically not exceed 5%, though users are encouraged to set tolerances based on their specific reference materials.
- Repeatability and Reproducibility: Incorporates interlaboratory data to address the method’s precision, including repeatability and reproducibility limits, supporting reliable decision-making.
- Reference Material: Stresses the importance of selecting or preparing reference material with a consistent particle size distribution, as this directly impacts acceptance tolerance.
- Apparatus and Good Practices: Specifies necessary testing equipment (test sieves, sieve shaker, balance) and best practices for apparatus preparation, test execution, and recordkeeping.
- Cleaning and Maintenance: Recommends proper cleaning methods for test sieves to ensure reliability and prevent contamination.
Applications
ASTM E2427-22 is highly relevant in a range of industries where particle size distribution is critical, such as:
- Quality Control in Production: Enables manufacturers in industries like pharmaceuticals, chemicals, aggregates, food, and minerals to regularly verify and accept test sieves, ensuring consistent process and product quality.
- Research and Development: Facilitates reliable and replicable particle size analysis for experimental studies and product development.
- Laboratory and Testing Services: Provides laboratories with a robust, standardized approach to evaluating the performance of test sieves over time, supporting accreditation and traceability requirements.
- Comparison of Test Sieves: Offers a practical method for comparing new, used, or different brands and types of test sieves, supporting informed purchasing and maintenance decisions.
- Preventing Measurement Drift: Helps identify wear or changes in sieve openings that may impact analytical results, safeguarding against measurement inaccuracies due to long-term use.

Conclusion
Implementing ASTM E2427-22 provides a systematic approach to verifying test sieve performance, enhancing confidence in particle size analysis for production and research. Following this standard ensures consistent, reliable, and comparable results, vital for quality control and regulatory compliance across multiple industries. For organizations seeking to optimize their particle size analysis, regular performance testing using ASTM E2427-22 and related standards is a best practice.
