SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This practice provides a guide to any individual, group, agency, or code body on the methods of test for truss assemblies fabricated from all types of construction materials. Sample size is generally kept to a minimum to reduce costs. The methods may be used to apply proof loads to an assembly or to test it to failure. Information obtained includes strength and stiffness data, and if assemblies are tested to their ultimate load carrying capacity, the failure method or mechanism can be observed. SCOPE 1.1 This practice is intended as a guide for use in the testing of truss assemblies fabricated from all types of construction materials. While the practice may be used for the testing of a variety of assemblies, it is primarily intended to be used in the testing of those trusses designed to be spaced at 1.2 m centers or greater. It can be used, but it is not normally intended, for the testing of wood residential trussed rafters. Either proof tests or tests to destruction may be run. 1.2 Limitations—It is not intended that this practice be used for routine quality control testing. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard statements, see Section 7. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM E73-13(2021): Standard Practice for Static Load Testing of Truss Assemblies is an internationally recognized engineering standard developed by ASTM International. This standard provides comprehensive guidelines for conducting static load testing on truss assemblies made from various construction materials. Its primary aim is to guide individuals, agencies, or code bodies in evaluating the strength and stiffness characteristics of trusses-both before or after installation-by applying controlled static loads, either as proof loads or to the point of structural failure. The practice offers a flexible methodology, allowing for the observation of failure modes and providing essential data for structural performance analysis.
Key Topics
-
Test Scope and Applicability
- Designed for truss assemblies spaced at 1.2 m centers or greater.
- Applies to all types of construction materials.
- Not typically used for routine quality control or testing of wood residential trussed rafters.
-
Testing Procedures
- Outlines required elements for testing, including material selection, sample conditioning, fabrication, and test setup.
- Details the application of proof tests (to verify load capacity) and tests to failure (to determine ultimate strength and observe failure mechanisms).
- Specifies load application increments, measurement of deflection at key points, and required duration for each load increment.
-
Test Apparatus and Measurement
- Requires safe and robust test fixtures to ensure that only the truss specimen, and not the support system, is being evaluated.
- Outlines appropriate use of devices such as hydraulic load cells, dynamometers, and optical measuring equipment for load and deflection measurements.
- Mandates use of SI units (metric system) exclusively.
-
Data Recording and Reporting
- Employs detailed reporting formats to ensure consistency and reliability of test results, per ASTM Practice E575.
- Recommends a minimum of three specimens for reliable data, with guidance on result averaging and interpretation.
-
Safety and Limitations
- Stresses the importance of safety during full-scale testing, especially to avoid hazards from potential structural failure.
- Leaves it to users to establish appropriate health, safety, and environmental practices in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Applications
ASTM E73-13(2021) is a vital resource for:
- Design Validation: Proof testing truss assemblies to ensure compliance with structural design requirements for commercial, industrial, and certain residential structures.
- Code Compliance: Supplying necessary evidence for building code officials and regulatory agencies as part of project approvals.
- Forensic Analysis: Documenting failure mechanisms in trusses when tested to destruction, useful for improving design or investigating structural failures.
- Research and Development: Supporting innovation in construction materials and truss designs by providing standardized testing methodologies.
- Field and Laboratory Testing: Used both during pre-installation phases to qualify products and, when appropriate, for evaluating installed truss assemblies in existing buildings.
