SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 The basic material properties obtained from this test method can be used in the control of the quality of interlayers, in the theoretical equations for designing laminated transparencies, and in the evaluation of new interlayers. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the shear strength and shear modulus of interlayer materials that are restrained by relatively high modulus plies in laminated transparencies. This test method can be used with single or multiple plies of the same interlayer materials. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F1362-18(2023), Standard Test Method for Shear Strength and Shear Modulus of Aerospace Glazing Interlayer Materials, provides a standardized method for determining crucial mechanical properties-shear strength and shear modulus-of interlayer materials used in laminated aerospace transparencies. Developed by ASTM International, this standard is essential for ensuring the reliability and safety of aerospace glazing systems by supporting consistent quality control, accurate material characterization, and robust product development.
This method specifies procedures for testing laminated transparency materials with single or multiple interlayer plies, utilizing SI units as the standard of measurement. It supports both the selection and quality verification of interlayer materials in aerospace applications.
Key Topics
- Shear Strength Testing: Measures the maximum shear stress the interlayer can sustain before failure, indicating the material's ultimate mechanical resistance.
- Shear Modulus Determination: Establishes the modulus, or stiffness, of the interlayer through the ratio of applied shear stress to resulting strain in the linear deformation range.
- Specimen Preparation and Conditioning: Describes guidelines for specimen geometry, preparation methods, and environmental conditioning (temperature and humidity), ensuring standardization and repeatability.
- Torsional Shear Apparatus: Outlines equipment requirements, emphasizing the elimination of bending and extraneous stresses to ensure valid test results.
- Reporting Requirements: Details on comprehensive reporting, including material types, test geometry, test conditions, results, and failure modes.
Applications
ASTM F1362-18(2023) is vital in the aerospace industry for several practical applications:
- Quality Assurance: Supports manufacturers in verifying the consistency, integrity, and compliance of aerospace glazing interlayer materials.
- Material Selection and Design: Provides essential mechanical property data for engineers and designers, facilitating the selection of appropriate interlayer materials for specific aerospace transparency applications.
- Product Development: Assists in the evaluation and comparison of new or alternative interlayer materials by measureably quantifying their shear properties.
- Failure Analysis: Offers insights into adhesive and cohesive characteristics of materials, which can guide improvements in glazing design and lamination processes.
- Compliance and Certification: Enables organizations to demonstrate adherence to internationally recognized test protocols, satisfying regulatory or client requirements.
