ABSTRACT This specification covers polyamide (PA) butt fusion fittings for use with polyamide pipe (IPS and ISO) and tubing (CTS). This specification covers butt fusion fittings intended for use with polyamide pipe and tubing. Fittings covered by this specification are normally molded. Fittings may be machined from extruded or molded stock. Conditioning, dimensions and tolerances, short-term rupture strength, sustained pressure test, and minimum hydrostatic burst pressure test shall be performed to conform with the requirements specified. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers polyamide (PA) butt fusion fittings for use with polyamide pipe (IPS and Metric) and tubing (CTS). Included are requirements for materials, workmanship, dimensions, marking, sustained pressure, and burst pressure. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F1733-24 is the internationally recognized standard specification for butt heat fusion polyamide (PA) plastic fittings designed for use with polyamide plastic pipe and tubing. Developed by ASTM International, this standard ensures quality, dimensional consistency, and performance for fittings used in pressure piping systems, including those for gas, water, and other engineered applications. Fittings covered are typically molded but may also be precision-machined from extruded or molded stock.
The standard specifies requirements for materials, workmanship, dimension and tolerances, marking, as well as performance aspects such as sustained pressure and burst pressure tests. It is intended to align with globally recognized principles for international standards development.
Key Topics
- Scope: Applies to butt fusion PA fittings for IPS, CTS, and metric-sized pipe and tubing, commonly used in pressure piping systems.
- Material Requirements: Fittings must be manufactured using polyamide compounds conforming to specific ASTM classification systems (e.g., D4066 or D6779).
- Dimensional Consistency: Details nominal dimensions, wall thicknesses, and tolerances for compatibility with associated pipe and tubing standards.
- Physical Performance: Mandates short-term rupture strength, sustained pressure, and minimum hydrostatic burst pressure testing, referencing ASTM D1598 and D1599 test methods.
- Quality and Marking: Coverage of manufacturing quality, surface finish, and clear marking with standard designation, manufacturer details, material designation, date code, and specific compatibility information.
- Testing and Inspection: Describes sampling procedures, test conditions, and the frequency of inspections, including requirements for federal and military procurement.
Applications
ASTM F1733-24 butt fusion polyamide fittings are integral components in modern pressure piping networks. Their primary applications include:
- Natural gas and petroleum fuel distribution: For high-integrity piping networks that require reliable joint strength and chemical compatibility. Fittings for these purposes must also comply with standards ASTM F2785 (PA12) or F2945 (PA11).
- Potable water systems: Where required, products must be evaluated and certified for health effects in accordance with ANSI/NSF 61 or NSF Standard 14.
- Industrial piping: Including water, compressed air, and other fluids in engineered applications that necessitate robust, leak-free connections.
The standard provides critical value by ensuring interchangeability of pipe and fittings, consistent performance under pressure, and suitability for both below-ground and above-ground installations.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance and system compatibility, ASTM F1733-24 should be used with reference to related standards, including:
- ASTM D1598: Test method for time-to-failure of plastic pipe under constant internal pressure
- ASTM D1599: Test method for resistance to short-time hydraulic pressure
- ASTM D2122: Determining dimensions of thermoplastic pipe and fittings
- ASTM D4066 & D6779: Classification systems for polyamide molding and extrusion materials
- ASTM F2785 / F2945: Polyamide 12 and 11 gas pressure pipe, tubing, and fittings
- NSF/ANSI 61 & NSF 14: Health effects and performance standards for drinking water system components
- Federal and Military Marking Standards: Fed. Std. No. 123, MIL-STD-129
By adhering to ASTM F1733-24, manufacturers, specifiers, and end users ensure the reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance of polyamide plastic piping systems in a wide array of critical infrastructure projects.
