ABSTRACT This specification covers the qualification requirements and test methods for field-assembled anodeless riser kits for use with outside diameter controlled polyethylene gas distribution pipes and tubing in sizes of up to 2 IPS. The anodeless riser kits shall be manufactured in accordance with the specified materials, physical properties, and design, which include the riser casings, moisture seals, threads, bend radius, coatings, welding procedures, and riser adapter to riser casing connections. The riser adapter to riser casing connections shall tested by tensile pull testing. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers requirements and test methods for field-assembled anodeless riser kits for use with outside diameter controlled polyethylene and PA11 gas distribution pipe and tubing in sizes through 2 IPS as specified in Specification D2513 polyethylene and Specification F2945 for PA11. 1.2 The test methods described are not intended to be routine quality control tests. 1.3 This specification covers the types of field-assembled anodeless riser kits described in 3.3.2. 1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and not considered standard. 1.5 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures), shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F2509-24 is the standard specification for field-assembled anodeless riser kits used with outside diameter controlled polyethylene (PE) and polyamide-11 (PA11) gas distribution pipe and tubing. Developed by ASTM International, this standard outlines qualification requirements and test methods for riser kits up to 2 IPS in size. These kits are essential components in gas distribution systems, enabling safe and reliable transition of fuel gas from underground plastic piping to above-ground metallic connections while ensuring mechanical protection and moisture resistance.
The specification addresses key aspects such as materials, riser casings, moisture seals, threads, bend radius, coatings, welding procedures, assembly connections, and qualification through tensile pull testing. Compliance with ASTM F2509-24 helps gas utilities and installers ensure product reliability and regulatory compliance for gas distribution networks.
Key Topics
- Field-Assembled Anodeless Riser Kits: Sets requirements for kits assembled on-site, including all necessary components except the gas-carrying PE or PA11 piping. Covers both rigid and flexible riser casings.
- Materials and Manufacturing: Specifies acceptable materials for riser kits, construction quality, and material performance. It addresses removal or covering of burrs to protect piping integrity.
- Design and Physical Properties: Details for riser casing wall thickness, bend radius requirements, thread standards (ASME B1.20.1), coatings, and welding requirements.
- Connection Performance: Emphasizes riser adapter-to-casing strength, requiring connections to pass tensile pull testing, ensuring resistance to separation and pull-out.
- Product Marking and Traceability: Mandates markings for traceability (manufacturer, production date, material designation, and compliance code F2509), as well as a 16-character identification code for tracking, supporting asset management and regulatory compliance.
- Installation and Quality Assurance: Installation instructions must comply with regulatory guidelines and be provided by the manufacturer. The standard also details marking and verification procedures for product quality.
Applications
ASTM F2509-24 plays a critical role in the following applications:
- Natural Gas Distribution: Ensures reliable, leak-tight connections for delivering natural gas in municipal and private gas networks using PE or PA11 piping.
- Utility Infrastructure Upgrades: Supports safe transition points between underground non-metallic gas piping and above-ground metallic piping in new installations and retrofit projects.
- Regulatory Compliance: Aids manufacturers, utilities, and installers in meeting industry and federal pipeline safety regulations, including U.S. CFR, Title 49, Part 192.
- Field Assembly: Enables utilities and contractors to assemble riser kits at the installation site, accommodating diverse system requirements and on-site conditions.
Related Standards
Implementing ASTM F2509-24 may involve compliance or integration with several related standards:
