SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 The suggestions of this guide are intended to provide proper installation materials and practices to be used during the installation of a central-vacuum system. SCOPE 1.1 This guide demonstrates proper methods for installing a central-vacuum system. 1.2 Appendix X1 contains additional sources of information that may be helpful to the user of this guide. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F2647-07(2023): Standard Guide for Approved Methods of Installing a Central Vacuum System (CVS) offers authoritative guidance on the proper installation procedures for central vacuum systems in residential and commercial buildings. Published by ASTM International, this standard aims to ensure reliability, longevity, and optimal performance of central vacuum installations by providing recommendations for materials, techniques, and key installation practices. The guide is relevant for installers, engineers, architects, and inspectors seeking best practices for safe and compliant CVS installation.
Key Topics
- Installation Materials and Practices: The standard outlines recommended materials for tubing and fittings, including plastic and metal components, and addresses proper storage and handling to maintain material integrity.
- Pipe Joining Methods: Step-by-step instructions are provided for the solvent cement method for plastic tubing and various joining methods for metal tubing, such as adhesives, compression couplings, and shrink sleeves.
- Component Placement: Guidance on locating hose inlet valves for maximum cleaning coverage, along with detailed information on avoiding obstructions and ensuring effective routing of trunk and branch lines.
- Valve and Power Unit Installation: Procedures are specified for wall valve installation in both new construction (unfinished walls) and retrofits in existing buildings (finished walls), as well as proper mounting and connection of the power unit.
- Fire Penetration and Compliance: The guide references applicable test methods and practices, emphasizing the importance of adhering to local fire safety codes when penetrating fire barriers.
- Testing and Quality Assurance: Instructions are provided for testing assembled systems to verify airtightness, correct valve operation, and system integrity before commissioning.
- Special Conditions: The appendix offers guidance for underground tubing installation and addresses environmental and safety considerations.
Applications
ASTM F2647-07(2023) is widely used in the following practical scenarios:
- Residential Central Vacuum Installation: Ideal for homeowners, builders, and HVAC professionals installing new or retrofitted CVS units, ensuring that all cleaning areas are effectively accessible.
- Commercial and Institutional Projects: Supports facility managers and contractors in schools, offices, and healthcare environments where central vacuum systems contribute to hygiene and building maintenance.
- Code Compliance and Inspection: Provides inspectors and installers with a standardized reference for assessing installation quality and adherence to national and international codes regarding fire safety, electrical routing, and system performance.
- Material Selection and Handling: Offers manufacturers and distributors guidance on recommended material specifications for CVS components, storage, and handling best practices.
- Maintenance and Repair: The detailed joining methods and troubleshooting steps assist service professionals in effective CVS maintenance and repair.
