SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This practice provides minimum recommendations for preparing and smoothing panel underlayments, thick poured gypsum concrete underlayments, thick poured lightweight cellular concrete underlayments and concrete subfloors with patching compounds. Actual requirements for materials to be used, mixtures, and other details are generally included as part of the project plans or specification details and may vary from the minimum recommendations set forth in this practice. SCOPE 1.1 This practice includes recommendations for preparing and smoothing panel underlayments, gypsum concrete and concrete subfloors with patching compounds upon which resilient flooring may be installed. 1.2 This practice does not cover the adequacy of the subfloor assembly to perform its structural requirements, which is governed by local building codes. 1.3 This practice does not supersede in any manner the resilient flooring, underlayment or adhesive manufacturer’s written instructions. Consult the individual resilient flooring, underlayment or adhesive manufacturer for specific recommendations. 1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F2678-16(2021) is the internationally recognized standard practice published by ASTM International for preparing panel underlayments, thick poured gypsum concrete underlayments, thick poured lightweight cellular concrete underlayments, and conventional concrete subfloors with underlayment patching compounds to receive resilient flooring. The standard sets forth the minimum recommendations for surface preparation, smoothing, and the use of patching compounds prior to installing resilient flooring products. This practice is widely used in commercial and residential construction to ensure proper installation conditions for a variety of resilient floor coverings, helping achieve optimal performance, durability, and safety.
Key Topics
- Surface Preparation: Guidance on cleaning, smoothing, and preparing panel underlayments, gypsum concrete underlayments, lightweight cellular concrete underlayments, and concrete subfloors before resilient flooring installation.
- Use of Patching Compounds: Requirements for the selection, application, mixing, and curing of patching compounds to achieve a level, mildew-resistant, and alkali-resistant surface.
- Environmental Conditions: Recommendations for appropriate temperature ranges and moisture control during patching and installation, as well as proper material storage and protection on site.
- Bonding and Testing: Advice on evaluating subfloor porosity, performing bond tests, and ensuring adequate adhesion between patching compounds and subfloor types.
- Panel Underlayment Requirements: Detailed recommendations regarding the use and installation of panel underlayments, including minimum thickness and offset of joints.
- Jobsite Safety and Environmental Practices: Emphasis on health, safety, and environmental responsibilities during surface preparation, including handling materials that may contain asbestos or lead, and using appropriate removal methods for old flooring and adhesives.
- Reference to Manufacturer Instructions: Clarification that this standard is supplementary to, and does not supersede, the specific requirements of resilient flooring, underlayment, or adhesive manufacturers.
Applications
- Commercial and Residential Flooring Projects: Essential for architects, flooring installers, and contractors preparing subfloors in diverse environments such as offices, schools, hospitals, and multi-family residences.
- Renovation and New Construction: Applicable during the installation of resilient flooring systems over new or existing subfloors made from wood panels, concrete, gypsum concrete, or lightweight cellular concrete.
- Quality Control and Compliance: Enables project teams to meet quality benchmarks, minimize installation failures, and ensure compatibility with resilient flooring systems by following industry-accepted best practices.
- Problem Prevention: Helps prevent common flooring failures such as adhesive loss, flooring movement, and mold growth by specifying strict preparation and patching conditions.
- General Building Code Compliance: Supports adherence to local building code requirements by referencing established standards and practices for subfloor and underlayment preparation.
