ABSTRACT This specification establishes the minimum requirements for the mechanical design, manufacture, inspection and testing of circular metallic bellows-type expansion joints used to absorb the dimensional changes resulting from piping thermal expansion or contraction, as well as the movements of terminal equipment and supporting structures. This specification indicates the ordering information for each expansion joint, such as the dimensional limitations, internal liner, end fittings, and flow medium. It also identifies the quality workmanship requirements, materials needed for manufacture, and other possible requirements. SCOPE 1.1 This specification establishes the minimum requirements for the mechanical design, manufacture, inspection and testing of circular metallic bellows-type expansion joints used to absorb the dimensional changes resulting from piping thermal expansion or contraction, as well as the movements of terminal equipment and supporting structures. 1.2 Additional or better features, over and above the minimum requirements set by this specification, are not prohibited by this specification. 1.3 The layout of many piping systems provides inherent flexibility through natural changes in direction so that any displacements produce primarily bending or torsional strains, within acceptable limits. Where the system lacks this inherent flexibility the designer should then consider adding flexibility through the use of metallic bellows-type expansion joints. 1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F2934-12(2023) is the international standard specification for circular metallic bellows-type expansion joints used in HVAC piping systems. Developed by ASTM International, this standard outlines the minimum requirements for the mechanical design, manufacture, inspection, and testing of these expansion joints. The aim is to ensure reliable absorption of dimensional changes in HVAC piping caused by thermal expansion, contraction, and movement of terminal equipment or supporting structures.
The standard provides guidance on quality workmanship, materials of construction, ordering details, inspection, and testing protocols, helping both manufacturers and purchasers ensure safety, durability, and compliance in mechanical and piping applications.
Key Topics
- Mechanical Design Requirements: Specifies the essential criteria for constructing circular metallic bellows-type expansion joints, including design data, dimensions, cycle life, and movements (axial, lateral, angular, and torsional).
- Manufacturing Materials: Defines acceptable materials for pressure-containing and structural components, requiring all parts to be made from new materials as per applicable ASTM and ASME standards.
- Ordering Information: Outlines what data must be provided when specifying a custom expansion joint (e.g., size, type, end fittings, flow medium, pressure, temperature, movements, and any special features or environmental conditions).
- Quality and Inspection: Establishes standards for workmanship, inspection, testing (including hydrostatic and pneumatic tests), and cleaning. Inspection involves both dimensional checks and visual examination to confirm conformance.
- Testing Procedures: Requires that expansion joints be tested at 1.5 times their design pressure, with additional tests specified by the purchaser possible.
- Documentation and Certification: Mandates clear documentation, certification of conformance, and the supply of installation instructions.
Applications
- HVAC Piping Systems: Expansion joints designed per ASTM F2934-12(2023) are used to manage movement and thermal stresses in commercial, industrial, and institutional HVAC installations.
- Energy Efficiency and System Integrity: By absorbing thermal movement, these joints prevent piping stress, reduce leak risks, and minimize maintenance in HVAC networks.
- Custom Piping Projects: The standard offers flexibility to accommodate site-specific requirements, including unique movements and environmental conditions.
- Safety and Compliance: Adherence to this standard supports compliance with broader regulatory codes such as ASME B31.1 Power Piping, enhancing workplace safety and reliability.

Practical Value
Complying with ASTM F2934-12(2023) assures engineers, facility managers, and procurement specialists that circular metallic bellows-type expansion joints will meet rigorous standards for HVAC piping applications. This results in:
- Enhanced System Reliability: Reduces unplanned downtime and costly repairs.
- Simplified Procurement: Clear ordering requirements streamline specification and purchasing.
- Improved Safety: Thorough inspection and testing protocols safeguard personnel and equipment.
- Regulatory Alignment: Provides consistent compliance with international codes and best practices.
