SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 The purpose of this practice is to provide the minimum requirements necessary for the establishment of a production acceptance program for a manufacturer of light sport aircraft. 4.2 The purpose of this specification is to provide the minimum requirements for the establishment of a ground and flight test program for verifying the initial production aircraft meets certain operational performance requirements that have been set forth by the manufacturer in its Pilot’s Operating Handbook (POH). 4.3 In addition, this specification provides minimum requirements to verify that each subsequent production airplane has no obvious defects that would prevent the safe operation of the airplane. 4.4 All requirements given in this specification are to be performed in accordance with the manufacturer’s Specification F2972-compliant quality assurance system requirements. 4.5 The following criteria should not be construed as requirements for specific features to be included on a LSA. When a requirement specifies a feature that does not exist on a LSA, the requirement does not apply. SCOPE 1.1 The following requirements apply for the manufacture of fixed wing aircraft, including gliders. This practice includes the production acceptance test requirements. 1.2 This practice applies to aircraft seeking civil aviation authority approval, in the form of flight certificates, flight permits, or other like documentation. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F3035-22: Standard Practice for Production Acceptance in the Manufacture of a Fixed Wing Light Sport Aircraft establishes essential minimum requirements for manufacturers to implement a comprehensive production acceptance program for fixed wing light sport aircraft (LSA), including both powered airplanes and gliders. Developed by ASTM International, this standard ensures that all production aircraft meet the operational performance requirements set by the manufacturer, support civil aviation authority certification, and are free from obvious safety defects. The standard operates in alignment with international guidelines and complements quality assurance systems, specifically those compliant with ASTM F2972.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
- Applies to the manufacture of fixed wing LSAs, including powered airplanes and gliders, as well as LSA kits.
- Relevant for aircraft seeking civil aviation authority approval, such as flight certificates and permits.
-
Production Acceptance Program
- Establishes minimum criteria for both ground and flight test procedures to verify aircraft readiness and operational compliance.
- Includes comprehensive checks for each aircraft unit before distribution.
-
Ground Testing Procedures
- Verification of weight and balance within specified limits.
- Inspections of systems, flight controls, seats, safety belts, powerplants, placards, and documentation.
- Preflight inspections to confirm all visible surfaces and fittings are free from defects.
- Taxi tests to assess brake function, steering, and instrument calibration.
-
Flight Testing Procedures
- Verification of safe flight operation per the manufacturer’s Pilot’s Operating Handbook (POH).
- Evaluation of handling, stall characteristics, airspeed indications, takeoff and climb performance, engine operation, and control responses.
- Special procedures for gliders and powered gliders, including launch and auto-feathering checks as applicable.
- Design confirmation flight tests to ensure production uniformity.
-
Handling Discrepancies
- Systematic processes to resolve any anomalies or non-compliances, including tagging and documented rework procedures.
-
Documentation and Traceability
- Detailed record-keeping of all inspections, checks, flight tests, responsible personnel, and authorizations.
- Accepts checklists as formal documentation.
Applications
-
LSA Manufacturers
- Enables the establishment of reliable and standardized production acceptance protocols for fixed wing LSAs and gliders.
- Supports compliance with civil aviation certification requirements for aircraft being introduced to the market.
-
Quality Assurance
- Integrates with and supports ASTM F2972-compliant quality management systems to maintain consistent safety and performance standards across production.
-
Regulatory and Certification Bodies
- Provides a recognized and internationally accepted basis for evaluating the conformity of fixed wing LSAs during certification processes.
- Facilitates smoother approval and documentation processes for manufacturers and builders.
-
Aircraft Builders (Kits)
- Supplies builders of LSA kits with clear ground and flight acceptance procedures, ensuring safe assembly and operation.
