ABSTRACT This specification applies to dehydrators intended for removing liquid by evaporation from processed or unprocessed food scraps and limited amounts of cardboard, paper, and biodegradable food service ware. Dehydrators shall be of the following type, size, and options as specified: SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers dehydrators intended for removing liquid by evaporation from processed or unprocessed food scraps and limited amounts of cardboard, paper, and biodegradable food service ware. 1.2 The values as stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values stated in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 13, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F3215-22: Standard Specification for Food Waste Dehydrators establishes requirements for the design, performance, and construction of equipment intended for the removal of liquid by evaporation from processed or unprocessed food scraps and limited quantities of cardboard, paper, and biodegradable food service ware. Published by ASTM International, this specification provides guidance to manufacturers, purchasers, and users to ensure quality, safety, and reliability in food waste dehydration equipment.
The standard emphasizes the use of corrosion-resistant materials, proper construction methods, safety features, and adherence to relevant electrical and environmental guidelines. ASTM F3215-22 supports organizations in waste reduction, promoting sustainability and effective waste management practices in food service, hospitality, and commercial settings.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Defines the types of food waste and biodegradable materials suitable for dehydration, and specifies equipment capacity categories.
- Material Requirements: Outlines acceptable materials such as corrosion-resistant steels, alloys, plastics, and finishes necessary to ensure durability and sanitary operation.
- Design and Construction: Provides specifications for critical components (e.g., tanks, shafts, paddles, condensers, heaters, motors, and casters), requiring that equipment is ready for installation, safe, cleanable, and robust.
- Safety and Electrical Compliance: Requires adherence to safety guidelines, including the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and UL 508A for control equipment.
- Performance and Testing: Details basic operational test methods to ensure capacity and leak-free operation, with future provisions for energy performance testing.
- Identification and Documentation: Mandates permanent machine identification and instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance according to ASTM F760.
- Packaging and Quality Assurance: Specifies packaging standards (ASTM D3951) and quality responsibility, ensuring equipment arrives intact and ready for use.
Applications
Food waste dehydrators designed under ASTM F3215-22 are vital in a range of settings:
- Commercial kitchens, restaurants, and hotels: For efficient, on-site reduction of food waste volume and weight, supporting hygienic disposal and cost savings on waste hauling.
- Institutional facilities: Such as universities, hospitals, or correctional facilities, where large quantities of organic waste are generated daily, requiring reliable waste volume management.
- Food processing plants: Assisting in managing biodegradable by-products, ensuring cleaner and more sustainable operations.
- Sustainable waste programs: Organizations implementing zero-waste or composting initiatives benefit from dehydrated waste's reduced odor and pathogen risk, as well as enhanced transport and storage convenience.
By facilitating controlled, consistent dehydration of a variety of food and biodegradable materials, compliance with ASTM F3215-22 enables organizations to improve operational sustainability, reduce environmental impact, and meet regulatory best practices.
Related Standards
When implementing or specifying food waste dehydrators in line with ASTM F3215-22, consider the following related standards for materials and installation:
- ASTM A240/A240M: Stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip requirements
- ASTM A276, A554, A582/A582M: Stainless steel bars, tubes, and free-machining steels
- ASTM A53/A53M: Welded and seamless steel pipe standards
- ASTM B43, B75: Brass pipe and copper tube specification
- ASTM D2000, D2287, F104: Gasket, seal, and polymer material requirements
- NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code): Electrical installation and safety standards
- UL 508/508A: Industrial control equipment standards
- ASTM F760: Food service equipment manuals and documentation
- ASTM D3951: Packaging and commercial packing material practices
Adhering to these interconnected standards enhances product reliability, user safety, and regulatory compliance in food waste management systems.
