SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This practice is for use by designers and specifiers, regulatory agencies, owners, and inspection organizations that are involved in the rehabilitation of main and lateral pipelines and manholes. As for any practice, modifications may be required for specific job conditions. SCOPE 1.1 This practice covers the requirements for the installation of seamless molded hydrophilic gaskets (SMHG) in cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) rehabilitation of main and lateral pipelines. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 There is no similar or equivalent ISO Standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F3240-19(2023) is the Standard Practice for Installation of Seamless Molded Hydrophilic Gaskets (SMHG) for Long-Term Watertightness of Cured-in-Place Rehabilitation of Main and Lateral Pipelines. Established by ASTM International, this guideline outlines the installation requirements for SMHGs-specialized gaskets designed to enhance the watertight integrity of cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) systems within both main and lateral pipelines. The standard applies primarily to utility owners, designers, contractors, regulatory agencies, and inspection organizations responsible for the rehabilitation of sewer and water infrastructure.
Key Topics
- Purpose and Applicability: The standard details procedures for installing SMHGs within CIPP rehabilitation projects, including main and lateral pipelines and manholes. It is applicable for new installations and repairs involving trenchless technology.
- Gasket Types: Defines SMHG configurations, such as end seal sleeves, connection seals, O-rings, and lateral caps, each made from neoprene rubber with hydrophilic properties for long-term sealing performance.
- Installation Procedures: Comprehensive steps for cleaning, inspection, measurement, and placement of SMHGs to ensure a robust watertight seal, supported by mechanical fasteners or anchor screws depending on pipe size.
- Material and Testing Requirements: Sets minimum material properties and testing benchmarks for hydrophilic expansion, durability, and ozone resistance, ensuring the reliability and effectiveness of SMHGs when exposed to sewer environments.
- Inspection and Acceptance: Details methods for post-installation visual and CCTV inspection to verify correct gasket placement and seal integrity, addressing warranty and in-service requirements.
Applications
Seamless Molded Hydrophilic Gaskets are integral to infrastructure rehabilitation projects involving cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) technology. Key applications of ASTM F3240-19(2023) include:
- Sewer Main and Lateral Rehabilitation: Enhances the long-term watertightness of CIPP liners at critical connection points, reducing infiltration and exfiltration.
- Manhole and Pipeline Sealing: Provides end seals at the manhole connection and other pipe junctions, optimizing system integrity.
- Localized Pipe Repairs: O-rings and lateral caps are utilized for sectional repairs, addressing leaks or damage without full pipe replacement.
- Municipal and Industrial Use: Suitable for public utilities, industrial piping systems, and other environments requiring robust, sustainable pipeline repairs using trenchless methods.
By following ASTM F3240-19(2023), practitioners ensure reliable pipe renewal and consistent water-tight performance, supporting asset lifecycle extension and environmental protection.
Related Standards
Adhering to ASTM F3240-19(2023) often involves reference to additional standards for comprehensive pipeline rehabilitation, including:
- ASTM F1216: Standard Practice for CIPP inversion and curing.
- ASTM F1743: Standard Practice for CIPP pulled-in-place installation.
- ASTM F2019: Rehabilitation using glass-reinforced plastic CIPP and UV curing.
