ABSTRACT This specification covers elastomeric seals (gaskets) used to seal the joints of plastic pipe used for gravity, low-pressure, and high-pressure applications. This refers to push-on joints which require no internal or external pressure to effect the initial seal. Tensile strength, elongation, hardness, compression set, accelerated aging, water immersion, ozone resistance, and force decay shall be tested to meet the requirements prescribed. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers elastomeric seals (gaskets) used to seal the joints of plastic pipe used for gravity, low-pressure, and high-pressure applications. This refers to push-on joints which require no internal or external pressure to effect the initial seal. 1.2 Requirements are given for natural or synthetic rubber gaskets, or a combination of both. 1.3 The text of this specification references notes, footnotes, and appendixes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the specification. 1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.5 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 7, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F477-14(2021) is the internationally recognized standard specification for elastomeric seals (gaskets) used in joining plastic pipes for applications ranging from gravity flow to low- and high-pressure systems. Developed by ASTM International, this standard outlines requirements for both natural and synthetic rubber gaskets, as well as thermoplastic elastomeric seals, which are critical components in ensuring effective, leak-free joints in plastic piping systems. Common uses span water supply, sewer, and industrial piping, where reliability and long-term performance are essential.
Compliance with ASTM F477 is crucial for system integrity in plastic pipe assemblies, providing guidelines on material composition, manufacturing quality, and physical properties to guarantee that seals perform under varied environmental and operational conditions.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Coverage ASTM F477 applies to all elastomeric gaskets intended for use with plastic pipe joints, specifically those using push-on joints, which achieve an initial seal without internal or external pressure.
-
Material Requirements
- Gaskets may be made from natural rubber, synthetic rubber, thermoplastic elastomers, or blends thereof.
- All seals must be dense, homogeneous, and free from defects like porosity or blisters.
-
Physical Properties & Testing Manufacturers are required to validate gaskets using standardized tests for:
- Tensile strength and elongation – Ensuring flexibility and strength
- Hardness (Type A durometer)
- Compression set – Assessing sealing performance under sustained load
- Accelerated aging – To verify durability
- Water and oil immersion resistance – For chemical stability
- Ozone resistance – Protection against weathering
- Stress relaxation (force decay) for thermoplastic elastomers
-
Dimensional Standards
- Gaskets must match the manufacturer’s specified dimensions, with defined tolerances for cross-sectional and diametric measurements.
-
Marking and Identification
- Products must be marked with the manufacturer’s name or symbol, gasket size, and a code to distinguish performance rating.
-
Potable Water Suitability
- Gaskets intended for drinking water contact must meet ANSI/NSF Standard 61 for health effects upon request by regulatory authorities.
Applications
Elastomeric gaskets conforming to ASTM F477 are essential in a wide range of plastic piping systems where sealed joints are critical, including:
- Municipal water supply and distribution
- Sanitary and storm sewer systems
- Irrigation pipelines
- Industrial fluid handling
- High-pressure and low-pressure piping installations
By establishing uniform criteria for material and performance, ASTM F477 ensures that seals maintain pipe system integrity, minimize leakage risk, and withstand environmental stresses such as temperature fluctuations, exposure to water and chemicals, and ozone degradation.
The standard is especially valuable in projects specifying push-on joints, where installation speed and reliability are pivotal. It is also frequently cited in procurement specifications for public and private water and sewer infrastructure.
Related Standards
ASTM F477 references and complements several other key ASTM and NSF standards, including:
