ABSTRACT This practice covers bolt and stud bolt lengths, quantities, and thread series for pipe to pipe and pipe to valve flanged joints. This specification presents tables of bolting lengths for different steel flanged joints. SCOPE 1.1 This practice covers bolt and stud bolt lengths, quantities, and thread series for pipe to pipe and pipe to valve flanged joints (Note 1) in the nominal pipe size ranges of 1/2 in. through 48 in. (12.7 mm through 1219 mm) diameter and pressure range of 125 psi through 2500 psi (0.8 kPa through 17 236 kPa). Note 1: This is applicable when flange of valve has the same thickness as mating flange. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F704-81(2022), Standard Practice for Selecting Bolting Lengths for Piping System Flanged Joints, provides comprehensive guidelines for determining bolt and stud bolt lengths, quantities, and thread series for a wide range of piping system flanged joints. Developed by ASTM, this practice supports consistent and efficient assembly of flange joints between pipe-to-pipe and pipe-to-valve connections. The standard is applicable to flanged joints within nominal pipe sizes from 1/2 inch to 48 inches (12.7 mm to 1219 mm) and pressure ratings from 125 psi to 2500 psi (0.8 kPa to 17,236 kPa), covering most industrial and marine piping applications.
ASTM F704-81(2022) serves as a foundational document for those involved in the manufacture, installation, and maintenance of flanged piping systems in sectors such as marine technology, oil and gas, and power generation, where proper bolting is critical for safety and reliability.
Key Topics
- Bolt and Stud Bolt Lengths: Provides detailed tables for the correct lengths required for different types of flanged joints, considering flange thickness, nut height, gasket allowance, and raised face dimensions.
- Quantities Required: Specifies the number of bolts or stud bolts per joint for various flange sizes and classes.
- Thread Series: Outlines the appropriate thread series (such as UNC and UN) based on bolt material and diameter to ensure compatibility and mechanical integrity.
- Calculation Methods: Includes formulas for calculating bolting lengths not explicitly listed in tables, accommodating custom or non-standard installations.
- Joint Types Covered:
- Pipe to pipe flanged joints
- Pipe to valve flanged joints (where valve flange thickness matches the mating flange)
- Assemblies involving steel, bronze, cast iron, and butterfly valves
- Pressure and Size Ranges: Applicable across a wide range of nominal pipe sizes and pressure classes.
Applications
ASTM F704-81(2022) is widely used in the design, procurement, and construction of piping systems to ensure:
- Correct Bolt Sizing: Selection of proper bolt and stud bolt lengths prevents leaks, misalignment, or mechanical failures in high-pressure or high-temperature environments.
- Standardization: Provides uniform bolting practices across projects, supporting compatibility and simplifying maintenance or retrofitting operations.
- Regulatory Compliance: Helps users meet relevant codes and international requirements by referencing standards such as ASME B16.5, B16.24, and MSS-SP-44.
- Marine and Industrial Sectors: Especially relevant for marine piping systems, shipbuilding, refineries, petrochemical plants, and power stations where flanged joint integrity is critical.
- Component Compatibility: Ensures correct mating of different materials (e.g., steel-to-bronze) and joint types (e.g., flat face, raised face, wafer-type valves, lug-type butterfly valves).
Related Standards
- ASME B16.5: Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings for NPS 1/2 through NPS 24 (Metric/Inch Standard)
- ASME B16.24: Cast Copper Alloy Pipe Flanges, Flanged Fittings, and Valves (Classes 150-2500)
- ASME B18.2.1: Square, Hex, Heavy Hex, and Askew Head Bolts (Inch Series)
- ASME B18.2.2: Nuts for General Applications (Inch Series)
- ASME B1.1: Unified Inch Screw Threads (UN and UNR Thread Forms)
- MSS-SP-44: Steel Pipe Flanges
These related standards ensure compatibility of flange dimensions, bolt sizes, and thread forms, making ASTM F704-81(2022) an integral resource for anyone tasked with the engineering or maintenance of flanged piping systems.
