ABSTRACT The Shipbuilders and Marine Paints and Coatings Product/Procedure Data Sheet2 provides on one sheet needed information concerning the characteristics of a specific paint or coating to include generic description, physical properties, surface preparation requirements, application requirements, and safety. When filling out the Product/Procedure Data Sheet remember that the information contained therein will be utilized by both technical and production personnel. The completed data sheets can be used by technical personnel to help evaluate the technical acceptability of a proposed material, by production personnel to evaluate production compatibility of proposed materials and to provide application instructions for selected paints and coatings materials, and by quality control personnel to verify attributes of materials. SCOPE 1.1 The Shipbuilders and Marine Paints and Coatings Product/Procedure Data Sheet2 provides on one sheet needed information concerning the characteristics of a specific paint or coating to include generic description, physical properties, surface preparation requirements, application requirements, and safety. The front side of the sheet contains four major, numbered paragraphs and a highlighted section for Special Safety Precautions. These paragraphs are as follows: I. Generic Type and Description II. Manufacturers Data III. Properties IV. Surface Preparation Minimum Requirements The back side of the page contains the following paragraphs: V. Mixing Procedure VI. Application 1.2 The completed data sheets can be used by technical personnel to help evaluate the technical acceptability of a proposed material, by production personnel to evaluate production compatibility of proposed materials and to provide application instructions for selected paints and coatings materials, and by quality control personnel to verify attributes of materials. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F718-22: Standard Specification for Shipbuilders and Marine Paints and Coatings Product/Procedure Data Sheet establishes a structured format for providing essential information on marine paints and coatings. This standard, developed by ASTM International, streamlines the communication of key characteristics, application procedures, and safety precautions for paints and coatings used in shipbuilding and marine applications. Suitable for technical, production, and quality control personnel, the data sheet ensures that critical information is accessible and consistent for evaluating materials and overseeing their proper use.
Key Topics
- Comprehensive Data Sheet: The standard outlines a one-sheet product/procedure data sheet, enabling users to summarize the characteristics and proper handling of marine paints and coatings clearly.
- Organized Information: The front side includes sections on:
- Generic Type and Description
- Manufacturer’s Data
- Properties (including physical traits and performance metrics)
- Surface Preparation Minimum Requirements
- Special Safety Precautions (highlighted for quick reference)
- Application Instructions: The reverse side details:
- Mixing Procedures (including guidance on solvents, induction times, and component addition)
- Application Requirements (such as dry times, environmental considerations, and equipment)
- Standardized Evaluation: By following a specified format, the data sheet aids in the technical assessment, production compatibility checks, and verification steps for quality assurance.
Applications
The ASTM F718-22 standard supports a range of practical uses in the shipbuilding and marine coatings industry:
- Material Evaluation: Technical staff use the data sheet to assess the compliance and suitability of proposed paints or coatings against project needs.
- Production Guidance: Application and mixing instructions help production teams correctly implement procedures, reducing errors and optimizing performance.
- Quality Control: Quality assurance professionals reference the data sheet to verify that selected paints and coatings meet specified attributes.
- Safety Compliance: Clearly outlined safety precautions ensure safe handling during surface preparation, mixing, application, and cleanup.
- Documentation for Bids and Submittals: The standardized format is often required by shipbuilding regulations and government agencies for official documentation during project submittals.
Related Standards
Several referenced ASTM standards and regulatory methods support the implementation and verification of ASTM F718-22:
- ASTM D56: Test Method for Flash Point by Tag Closed Cup Tester
- ASTM D93: Test Methods for Flash Point by Pensky-Martens Closed Cup Tester
- ASTM D523: Test Method for Specular Gloss
- ASTM D1475: Test Method for Density of Liquid Coatings, Inks, and Related Products
- ASTM D1640: Test Methods for Drying, Curing, or Film Formation of Organic Coatings
- ASTM D2697: Test Method for Volume Nonvolatile Matter in Clear or Pigmented Coatings
- ASTM D3278: Test Methods for Flash Point of Liquids by Small Scale Closed-Cup Apparatus
- EPA Method 24: Determination of Volatile Matter Content, Density, Volume Solids, and Weight Solids of Surface Coatings (40 CFR Part 60 Appendix A)
Practical Value
ASTM F718-22 simplifies the exchange and review of critical marine paint and coating information throughout the shipbuilding lifecycle. By standardizing documentation, it enhances compliance, safety, and quality while providing a clear reference for all stakeholders involved in marine coatings application and maintenance. Adherence to this standard supports regulatory compliance, especially for projects overseen by the U.S. Department of Defense and other regulatory bodies.
