Abstract This British Standard, a part of the BS 5703 series, describes cumulative sum (cusum) methods applicable to binomial (yes/no) data and to counts of attributes and events arranged in some meaningful sequence. The changes included in this British Standard from the previous edition are the following: The cusum designs in the 1982 version of BS 5703-4 were constrained in two senses. They were limited to tabulations of: a) two procedures, termed C1 and C2, having average run lengths (ARLs) at the target level of at least 1 000 and 200 respectively; b) schemes to detect shifts in the upward direction only. While retaining the C1 and C2 tabular approach for those who prefer manual access to design specifications this 2003 version of BS 5703-4 is extended in respect of both a) and b). It provides accessibility to more comprehensive cusum schemes than just the C1 and C2 ones. It also includes the use of schemes to detect drift in either direction.
