What is BS 5892-7 - Specification for product and technical approval requirements for cast wheels about?
BS 5892 is a European standard that discusses the railway rolling stock materials. BS 5892-7 is the seventh part of the multi-part series that outlines the characteristics of and technical approval requirements for cast railway wheels to manufacture efficient cast wheels for smooth rail operation.
BS 5892-7 can be applied in conjunction with BS or BS EN standards for axles and wheelsets. Three steel grades, C48, C56 and C64, are defined in BS 5892-7 .
BS 5892-7 applies to cast wheels that are rim-chilled and have their wheel webs shot-peened. The wheels defined in BS 5892-7 are for applications up to 120 km/h. BS 5892-7 only applies to wheels of a new design or new application.
The requirements outlined in BS 5892-7 are intended to be used to assess the validity of the design the choice for the proposed use and constitute the technical approval procedure.
