ABSTRACT This specification covers coated glass mat water-resistant gypsum backing panel designed for use on ceilings and walls in bath and shower areas as a base for the application of ceramic or plastic tile. Coated glass mat water-resistant gypsum backing panel shall consist of a noncombustible water-resistant gypsum core, surfaced with glass mat, partially or completely embedded in the core, and with a water-resistant coating on one surface. The specimens shall be tested for flexural strength, humidified deflection, core hardness, end hardness, edge hardness, nail pull resistance, water resistance, and surface water absorption. Coated glass mat water-resistant gypsum backing panel shall have surfaces true and free of imperfections that render the panel unfit for its designed use. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers coated glass mat water-resistant gypsum backing panel designed for use on ceilings and walls in bath and shower areas as a base for the application of ceramic or plastic tile. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. 1.3 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C1178/C1178M-24: Standard Specification for Coated Glass Mat Water-Resistant Gypsum Backing Panel establishes requirements for glass mat gypsum panels with water-resistant coatings. These panels are specifically designed for installation on walls and ceilings in bath and shower areas, serving as a robust substrate for the application of ceramic or plastic tile. This international standard ensures consistent performance and quality for products used in moisture-prone environments, supporting safe and durable construction outcomes.
Key Topics
- Product Composition: Panels consist of a noncombustible, water-resistant gypsum core, surfaced with glass mat facers, with a water-resistant coating on at least one surface.
- Physical Performance Criteria:
- Flexural Strength: Panels must meet minimum breaking load requirements, tested face up and face down.
- Humidified Deflection: Standards set maximum limits for deflection after exposure to humid conditions.
- Hardness: Core, end, and edge hardness are specified to ensure durability during handling and installation.
- Nail Pull Resistance: Performance thresholds for nail retention help maintain panel integrity.
- Water Absorption: Panels are tested to limit total water absorption, supporting mold and moisture resistance.
- Surface Water Absorption: Limits are set on absorption through the coated face, critical for wet-area installations.
- Types and Ratings:
- Fire Resistance (Type X): Some panels provide a minimum one- or two-hour fire resistance rating, tested to recognized methods.
- Mold Resistance: Defined limits on mold growth when tested according to ASTM standards.
- Dimensional Tolerances: The specification includes strict tolerances for thickness, width, length, and squareness to ensure consistent fit and performance.
Applications
Panels meeting the requirements of ASTM C1178/C1178M-24 are widely used in:
- Bathroom and Shower Areas: Slated as tile backing boards on both walls and ceilings where moisture resistance is critical.
- Kitchens and Utility Rooms: Provides reliable support under finishes where incidental water exposure may occur.
- Multi-Family and Commercial Construction: Ensures compliance with building codes for assemblies requiring water-resistant and fire-rated substrates.
- Fire-Rated Assemblies: Type X panels are specified where fire resistance and moisture protection are both required.
- Renovations and Retrofits: Used to upgrade moisture resistance in existing buildings.
Key benefits include improved durability, moisture and mold resistance, ease of tile installation, and compliance with fire and construction safety codes.
Related Standards
Many projects using coated glass mat water-resistant gypsum backing panels also reference additional ASTM standards, including:
- ASTM C11: Terminology related to gypsum and building systems
