ABSTRACT This specification establishes the manufacture, testing, and performance requirements of two types of asphalt-based emulsions for use in a relatively thick film as a protective coating for metal surfaces. Type I are quick-setting emulsified asphalt suitable for continuous exposure to water within a few days after application and drying. Type II, on the other hand, are emulsified asphalt suitable for continuous exposure to the weather, only after application and drying. Upon being sampled appropriately, the materials shall conform to composition requirements as to density, residue by evaporation, nonvolatile matter soluble in trichloroethylene, and ash and water content. They shall also adhere to performance requirements as to uniformity, consistency, stability, wet flow, firm set, heat test, flexibility, resistance to water, and loss of adhesion. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers emulsified asphalt suitable for application in a relatively thick film as a protective coating for metal surfaces. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D1187/D1187M-97(2024) sets the standard specification for asphalt-base emulsions intended for use as protective coatings for metal surfaces. Developed by ASTM International, this standard establishes key requirements for the manufacture, testing, composition, and performance of emulsified asphalts that form relatively thick films. The specification targets applications demanding durable, reliable protection from environmental factors such as water and weather exposure.
This standard is widely referenced in coating projects aiming to extend the life of metal structures, pipes, tanks, and other industrial or architectural metal components, especially where cost-effective, quick-setting, or weather-resistant surface protection is required.
Key Topics
-
Types of Emulsions:
- Type I: Quick-setting asphalt emulsions suitable for continuous water exposure within a few days after application and drying.
- Type II: Emulsified asphalts designed for continuous weather exposure, effective after full application and drying.
-
Material and Composition Requirements:
- Consists of asphalt, water, and approved emulsifying agents.
- Must meet specific density, residue, nonvolatile matter, ash, and water content parameters.
-
Performance Criteria:
- Uniformity: Emulsions must remain homogeneous after storage.
- Consistency: Must allow easy application by brush, mop, or trowel to vertical metal surfaces at specified temperatures.
- Stability: No coagulation during or after mixing with cement.
- Flexibility: Coatings must not crack, flake, or lose adhesion when bent.
- Resistance: Coatings should not blister or re-emulsify under water; loss of adhesion not permitted (for Type I).
-
Testing and Sampling:
- Material must be sampled and tested according to referenced ASTM procedures to confirm compliance.
- Inspection and rejection protocols are specified to ensure product quality.
-
Packaging and Marking:
- Product containers must be clearly labeled with manufacturer details, type of emulsion, lot number, and a statement that it conforms to ASTM D1187/D1187M.
Applications
Protective asphalt-base emulsions as specified in ASTM D1187/D1187M-97(2024) provide essential long-term protection for metal surfaces, making them valuable in numerous industrial and commercial settings, including:
- Metal Roofs and Structures: Offering a durable barrier against corrosion and water ingress.
- Pipelines and Storage Tanks: Applying thick asphalt-based films to provide resistance to moisture, chemicals, and atmospheric conditions.
- Industrial Equipment: Coatings for machinery or components exposed to harsh environmental factors.
- Infrastructure Projects: Suitable for use in bridges, pylons, and other metal frameworks that require robust protective systems.
Proper application of these asphalt emulsions helps prevent oxidation, extends asset lifespan, minimizes maintenance costs, and enhances overall safety and reliability.
