What is this standard about?
It defines all of the essential variables that must be considered when making thermal joints in plastic moulded components, in order to produce components of consistently acceptable quality.

Why should you use this standard?
Welded and heat staked thermoplastic moulded components of inconsistent quality have been and are being produced, even for safety critical applications, due to a lack of knowledge of what joining parameters need to be controlled within a set range. BS 89100 provides this information and also provides template documents that can be used by the organization responsible for the joining activity to record the values for each essential variable in the joining process(es) they are using.
The standard:
Defines all essential process variables for the thermal joining processes currently used for thermoplastic moulded components Requires that a range of values for each essential variable be qualified Requires that a joint design be recorded for every welded/staked component, as part of the Thermal Joining Process Specification
It covers: ultrasonic welding/staking/spot welding, infrared welding, hot gas convection welding, linear vibration welding, orbital vibration welding, spin welding, laser welding, hot plate welding, hot air heat staking, electrical heat staking and infrared heat staking.
