This document specifies definitions and requirements for solid-wall pipes with or without internal skin and smooth internal and external surfaces extruded from the same compound throughout the wall, fittings and the system of polyethylene (PE) piping systems to be intended for use in non-pressure underground drains and sewers for wastewater. NOTE 1 Products complying with this document can also be used in non-pressure underground drains and sewers for surface water. This document is applicable to: a) non-pressure drains and sewers, which are intended to be used buried underground outside the building structure, reflected in the marking of products by “U”; b) non-pressure drains and sewers, which are intended to be used buried underground both outside (application area code “U”) and within the building structure, reflected in the marking of products by “UD”. This document specifies test methods referred to in this document and test parameters. This document is applicable to pipes and fittings with or without an integral socket. This document covers a range of pipe and fitting sizes, stiffness classes, tolerance classes and gives recommendations concerning colours. NOTE 2 It is the responsibility of the purchaser or specifier to make the appropriate selections from these aspects, taking into account their particular requirements and any relevant national regulations and installation practices or codes. In conjunction with CEN/TS 12666-2 [1] it is applicable to PE pipes and fittings, their joints and to joints with components of other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for buried piping systems for non-pressure drains and sewers. The fittings can be manufactured by injection moulding or can be fabricated from pipes and/or mouldings. This document is applicable to PE pipes and fittings for the following types of joints: — elastomeric ring seal joints; — butt fused joints; — electrofusion joints; — mechanical joints. NOTE 3 Pipes, fittings and other components conforming to any of the plastics product standards listed in the Annex C (informative) can be used with pipes and fittings conforming to this document, provided they conform to the requirements for joint dimensions given in Clause 7 and to the requirements of Clause 7 and Table 13.
Abstract
Overview
EN 12666-1:2026 specifies requirements and definitions for solid-wall polyethylene (PE) pipes, fittings, and piping systems used in non-pressure underground drains and sewers for wastewater and surface water applications. Developed by CEN, this European Standard applies to both pipes and fittings with smooth internal and external surfaces, made from the same material throughout the wall, and is relevant for both outside building installations (“U” marking) and installations that cover both inside and outside building applications (“UD” marking).
The standard includes specifications for dimensions, materials, mechanical and physical properties, colour, allowable use of recyclates, and joint types. It offers guidance on test methods, system compatibility, and product markings, ensuring consistent quality and performance for buried piping systems handling non-pressurized wastewater and surface water.
Key Topics
- Material Specifications: Covers requirements for PE compounds used in pipes and fittings, including the permitted use of virgin and recycled materials, ensuring robust chemical and mechanical performance.
- Product Characteristics: Establishes dimensional tolerances, wall thicknesses, and colour recommendations for a comprehensive range of sizes and stiffness classes.
- Joint Types: Applies to several jointing methods, including:
- Elastomeric ring seal joints
- Butt fused joints
- Electrofusion joints
- Mechanical joints
- Testing and Compliance: Outlines relevant test methods for product verification, such as testing for dimensions, mechanical characteristics, watertightness, and sealing performance, referencing supporting standards.
- Marking Requirements: Specifies marking conventions for area of application (“U” and “UD”) and necessary product information, supporting traceability and compliance.
Applications
EN 12666-1:2026 is critical for manufacturers, designers, and installers of underground drainage and sewer systems seeking reliable, long-life, and regulatory-compliant solutions. Typical applications include:
- Non-pressure underground drains: PE piping systems conforming to this standard are used extensively in foul wastewater and stormwater conveyance outside and inside building structures.
- Municipal and civil works: Main sewer and drainage pipelines in cities, industrial zones, and other infrastructure projects regularly utilize PE systems specified by this standard.
- Residential, commercial, and industrial developments: Ensures the safe transfer of domestic and industrial effluents from properties to municipal sewers or treatment plants.
- Surface water management: The standard covers pipes for surface water drains where non-pressure operation is required.
Conformance ensures compatibility and safe jointing, even across different plastic and non-plastic materials, as long as joint dimensions and system requirements specified in EN 12666-1:2026 are met.
Related Standards
For a holistic approach to design, certification, and installation, EN 12666-1:2026 references and is complemented by several related standards, including:
- EN 12666-2: Assessment of conformity for PE piping systems for non-pressure drains and sewers.
- EN 1401-1: Specifies PVC-U piping systems for similar applications.
- EN ISO 13254 / EN ISO 13259 / EN ISO 13257: Include vital test methods for watertightness, leaktightness, and resistance to temperature cycling.
- EN 681-1 and EN 681-2: Define requirements for elastomeric seals used in joints for water and drainage pipes.
- EN ISO 1133-1, EN ISO 1167-1/2: Cover melt flow rate testing and pressure testing methods for thermoplastic materials.
Consultation of these and national installation codes is encouraged for complete compliance, installation, and product selection.
