This document specifies the design and installation of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) electrical systems used for the purpose of electrical propulsion and/or the electrical part of a hybrid propulsion system (system with both a rechargeable battery and a fuelled power source). This document is applicable to electrical propulsion systems operated in the following ranges either individually or in combination: direct current of less than 1 500 V DC; single-phase alternating current up to AC 1 000 V; three-phase alternating current up to AC 1 000 V. This document is applicable to electrical propulsion systems installed in small craft up to 24 m length of the hull (LH in accordance with ISO 8666).
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 16315:2026 - Small craft - Electrical systems used for electrical propulsion (ISO 16315:2026) is a European and international standard published by CEN. This standard specifies the requirements for the design and installation of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) electrical systems utilized for electrical propulsion or the electrical component of hybrid propulsion systems in small craft up to 24 meters in hull length. It aims to ensure safe performance, integration, and operation of electrical propulsion systems in marine environments by outlining practices to protect against electric shock, fire, and system failure.
EN ISO 16315:2026 covers systems operating individually or in combination within these limits:
- Direct current: less than 1,500 V DC
- Single-phase AC: up to 1,000 V
- Three-phase AC: up to 1,000 V
Key Topics
The standard addresses several critical areas relevant to the safety, performance, and compatibility of electrical propulsion systems for small craft:
- General System Requirements: Design principles, component selection, and system integration for both AC and DC electrical propulsion systems.
- Component Guidance: Requirements for batteries, battery management systems, generators, converters, propulsion motors, panel boards, controls, transformers, isolation switches, fuses, and cables.
- System Separation: Guidance on segregating electrical propulsion systems from other onboard electrical circuits, and dealing with combined or hybrid power sources.
- Safety Measures:
- Protection against electric shock (insulation, earthing, direct contact protection)
- Over-current protection (circuit breakers, fuses, disconnectors)
- Battery compartment ventilation and installation
- Fire prevention and hazardous area management
- Control & Monitoring: Instrumentation for system status, emergency stops, alarms, and trip devices.
- Environmental Considerations: Addressing the effects of temperature, humidity, vibration, and exposure to marine conditions.
- EMC Compliance: Ensuring electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) to minimize interference with other systems.
- Testing & Documentation: Procedures for system verification and requirements for user and installer documentation.
Applications
EN ISO 16315:2026 is highly relevant to manufacturers, designers, installers, and owners of small craft with electrical or hybrid propulsion systems, such as:
- Recreational boats: Yachts, sailboats, and electric-powered pleasure craft.
- Commercial small craft: Workboats, passenger launches, and tenders under 24 meters.
- Hybrid propulsion systems: Boats using both rechargeable battery banks and fuel-powered generators.
- Upgrade and retrofit projects: Adding or updating electrical propulsion in existing craft.
Applying this standard supports:
- Compliance with essential safety and performance requirements for marine electrical systems.
- Harmonization with the European Directive 2013/53/EU for recreational crafts.
- Assurance of proper system integration, reliable operation, and protection of personnel.
Related Standards
EN ISO 16315:2026 is aligned with and refers to several international standards crucial for small craft and marine electrical installations, including:
- ISO 13297: Small craft - Electrical systems - AC installations
- ISO 10133: Small craft - Electrical systems - Extra-low-voltage DC installations
- IEC 60092 series: Electrical installations in ships, including small vessels and protective rules
- ISO 8846: Small craft - Electrical devices - Protection against ignition of flammable gases
