IEC 60034-27-3:2015 provides guidelines for the test procedures and the interpretation of test results for dielectric dissipation factor measurements on the stator winding insulation of rotating electrical machines. These guidelines are valid for rotating electrical machines with conductive slot coatings operating at a rated voltage of 6 kV and higher. This standard applies to individual form-wound stator bars and coils outside a core (uninstalled), individual stator bars and coils installed in a core and complete form-wound stator winding of machines in new or aged condition. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous publication IEC TR 60894:1987: - inclusion of digital measurement of dissipation factor and capacitance; - inclusion of limits for dissipation factor values; - detailed description of measuring techniques; extension of scope to complete windings.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60034-27-3:2015 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that provides comprehensive guidelines for measuring and interpreting the dielectric dissipation factor (tan δ) of stator winding insulation in rotating electrical machines. This standard applies to high-voltage machines-specifically those with rated voltages of 6 kV and above-and covers both new and aged insulation systems with conductive slot coatings. It is applicable to individual form-wound stator bars and coils (both installed and uninstalled) as well as to complete form-wound stator windings.
This document is crucial for manufacturers, test engineers, and maintenance personnel aiming to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of large rotating machines such as generators and motors. IEC 60034-27-3:2015 replaces the previous IEC TR 60894:1987, with significant updates reflecting advancements in measurement techniques.
Key Topics
- Test Procedures: The standard outlines step-by-step methods for measuring the dielectric dissipation factor, including the preparation of test objects, use of guard electrodes, and different configurations relevant to bars, coils, and complete windings.
- Measurement Techniques: It includes detailed descriptions of both traditional analogue bridging methods (such as the Schering bridge and transformer ratio arm bridge) and modern digital phase shift measurement systems. The inclusion of digital equipment accommodates technological advancements in measurement accuracy.
- Dissipation Factor Limits: The document establishes empirically-derived limits for acceptable dissipation factor values, assisting in the assessment of insulation condition and manufacturing quality.
- Interpretation of Results: Guidance is provided for interpreting dielectric loss characteristics, identifying uniformity in new manufacture, and diagnosing ageing or degradation in operational windings.
- Reporting and Evaluation: The standard specifies information to be included in test reports, covering both the testing of new windings/coils and routine diagnostics of aged windings.
Applications
The standardized procedures in IEC 60034-27-3:2015 are designed for practical implementation in a variety of industry settings:
- Manufacturing Quality Control: Essential during production of high-voltage rotating machines to verify consistency and integrity of the stator winding insulation.
- Commissioning of Equipment: Used to baseline insulation quality during installation and initial energization of new machines.
- Maintenance and Diagnostics: Facilitates condition monitoring of insulation systems, allowing for trend analysis over time to inform preventive maintenance and reduce the risk of catastrophic insulation failure.
- Aging Assessment: Provides valuable diagnostic data for scheduling refurbishment or replacement of insulation materials in service-aged equipment.
Related Standards
For optimal application and integration, IEC 60034-27-3:2015 should be used alongside the following standards:
