IEC 60034-3:2020 applies to large three-phase synchronous generators, having rated outputs of 10 MVA and above driven by steam turbines or combustion gas turbines. Also included are synchronous Mvar compensators of the same output range connected to a grid for the purpose of exchanging reactive power. This document supplements basic requirements for rotating machines given in IEC 60034-1. This seventh edition cancels and replaces the sixth edition published in 2007. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - title modified; - scope extended to synchronous compensators; - rotor overcurrent requirements added; - impact of stator harmonics on rotor unbalanced load capability introduced; - synchronisation requirements added; - adjustments of temperatures or temperature rise revised for gas turbine applications; - requirements for auxiliaries updated.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60034-3:2020 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the specific requirements for large three-phase synchronous generators driven by steam turbines or combustion gas turbines and synchronous compensators. This standard applies to units with a rated output of 10 MVA and above. It supplements the basic requirements for rotating electrical machines outlined in IEC 60034-1.
The seventh edition of IEC 60034-3 replaces the 2007 edition, with significant technical updates including the extension of scope to synchronous compensators, new rotor overcurrent provisions, harmonics impact assessments, synchronization requirements, and updated temperature ratings for gas turbine applications.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Ratings: Defines rated outputs, voltage, power factors, and speed requirements for synchronous generators and compensators. It addresses the operational conditions relevant to steam and gas turbine-driven machines.
-
Electrical and Mechanical Requirements: Covers insulation standards, withstand voltage tests, rotor shaft current insulation, overspeed testing, and critical speed considerations to ensure safe operation and durability.
-
Capability and Performance:
- Detailed P-Q capability diagrams for active and reactive power exchange.
- Overcurrent and fault current requirements for both stator and rotor windings.
- Requirements for handling unbalanced currents and harmonics.
-
Synchronization and Stability: Introduces synchronization criteria essential for connecting generators and compensators to the electrical grid safely and reliably.
-
Cooling Systems:
- Guidelines for air-cooled, hydrogen-cooled, and liquid-cooled machines.
- Specifies limits on coolant temperature and temperature rises, crucial for maintaining generator efficiency and longevity.
-
Auxiliary Systems and Safety:
- Updated rules for auxiliaries such as cooling, ventilation, and gas handling.
- Detailed precautions for hydrogen-cooled machines covering hydrogen purity, pressure control, and ventilation.
Applications
IEC 60034-3:2020 serves as the essential reference for manufacturers, designers, commissioning engineers, and operators of large synchronous generators used in power generation facilities such as:
-
Thermal Power Plants: Steam turbines driving synchronous generators in coal, nuclear, and combined cycle plants follow this standard to meet reliability and performance benchmarks.
-
Gas Turbine Power Stations: Gas turbine-driven synchronous generators benefit from the standard’s specific requirements tailored for start-up cycles, temperature management, and transient operations.
-
Grid Stability Solutions: Synchronous compensators used to exchange reactive power on the electrical grid, enhancing voltage support and power factor correction, are governed by this standard.
By adhering to IEC 60034-3:2020, power generation companies can ensure enhanced operational safety, machine longevity, and compliance with international performance practices.
