IEC 60050-826:2022 gives the general terminology used for electrical installations such as those of residential, industrial or commercial premises. It does not cover systems for distribution of energy to the public or power generation and transmission for such systems. This new edition reviews and complements the previous one. An important aim of the revision is to achieve compliance with IEC 61140:2016. In addition, some new terms have been added from IEC 60364-8-1:2014 and IEC 60364-8-2:2018. It has the status of a horizontal publication in accordance with IEC Guide 108. This terminology is consistent with the terminology developed in the other specialized parts of the IEV. This horizontal publication is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of IEC publications in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 108. One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of horizontal publications in the preparation of its publications.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60050-826:2022 is part of the International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEV), focusing on terminology for electrical installations. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard unifies the general terms used for electrical installations in residential, industrial, and commercial environments. It specifically excludes terms related to public energy distribution, power generation, and transmission.
The 2022 edition updates the previous version by aligning with IEC 61140:2016 and introducing new terminology from IEC 60364-8-1:2014 and IEC 60364-8-2:2018. As a horizontal publication according to IEC Guide 108, this standard is intended as a foundational reference for IEC technical committees and supports consistency across international electrotechnical standards.
Key Topics
IEC 60050-826:2022 systematically organizes essential terminology for electrical installations, helping ensure uniform understanding and compliance. Key topics covered include:
- Characteristics of Electrical Installations: Definitions covering the types, purposes, and boundaries of electrical installations.
- Voltages and Currents: Standard terms describing electrical parameters within installations.
- Protection and Safety Measures: Terms related to electric shock prevention, earthing, bonding, and related protective systems.
- Electric Circuits and Wiring Systems: Vocabulary for describing various types of circuits, wiring methods, and associated components.
- Control, Isolation, and Switching: Definitions concerning switching devices, isolators, and methods for ensuring operational safety.
- Energy Efficiency and Smart Grids: Targeted terminology reflecting the integration of energy management and smart grid concepts.
- Capability of Persons: Classification of personnel based on training or competency concerning electrical installation work.
Each section not only defines primary terms (in both English and French) but also includes equivalents in languages such as Arabic, German, Spanish, Japanese, Polish, Swedish, and Chinese, supporting global usability.
Applications
The practical value of IEC 60050-826:2022 extends across the electrotechnical industry:
- Preparation of Technical Standards: Serves as the reference vocabulary for IEC technical committees, aiding in the creation of harmonized standards.
- Design and Documentation: Assists electrical designers, engineers, and consultants in using correct and internationally recognized terms when specifying and documenting electrical installations.
- Training and Certification: Provides a foundational glossary for educational programs and technical training, fostering a clear understanding of terms among engineers, electricians, and inspectors.
- Translation and Localization: Facilitates accurate translation of documentation and technical standards, critical for multinational projects and regulatory compliance.
- Regulatory Alignment: Offers authoritative terminology for use in codes, regulations, and legal documents applicable to electrical installations.
By referencing IEC 60050-826, organizations enhance communication, improve safety, and promote global conformity in the electrical sector.
