IEC 60068-2-13:2021 specifies methods of test applicable to specimens which, during transportation, storage or in service, can be subjected to low air pressure. This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition, published in 1983. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) alignment with recently revised parts of IEC 60068-2; b) Clause 5: severities aligned with IEC 60721-2-3 and IEC 60721-3 (all parts); c) addition of Annex A (guidance on selecting the duration of exposure).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60068-2-13:2021, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), specifies standardized test methods to evaluate the ability of equipment, components, and other specimens to withstand low air pressure conditions experienced during transportation, storage, or use. Commonly known as Test M: Low air pressure, this standard is essential for manufacturers and industries whose products may be exposed to high-altitude or low-pressure environments. The 2021 edition includes technical updates for improved alignment with related IEC environmental testing standards and introduces new guidance for determining test durations.
Key Topics
- Low Air Pressure Testing: Procedures for subjecting specimens to reduced atmospheric pressure to simulate environmental conditions at high altitudes.
- Test Severities and Parameters: Recommendations for air pressure values and durations, referencing established altitude-pressure relationships.
- Test Apparatus Requirements: Chamber specifications to ensure stable and accurate low-pressure conditions during the test.
- Preconditioning and Measurements:
- Steps to visually inspect and electrically or mechanically check specimens before and after testing.
- Preconditioning guidance if required by the relevant product specification.
- Test Process:
- Pressure reduction and maintenance at specified values.
- Conditioning duration, with recommended time intervals (5 min, 30 min, 2 h, 4 h, 16 h).
- Recovery procedures following exposure.
- Reporting Requirements: Essential data and observations to include in comprehensive test reports, ensuring repeatability and transparency.
Applications
IEC 60068-2-13:2021 is widely applicable across multiple industries, including electronics, telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, and defense, where products must perform reliably under varying atmospheric pressures. Practical scenarios include:
- Aviation and Aerospace Equipment: Ensuring reliability of components exposed to very low air pressure at high altitudes.
- Transport and Storage: Testing packaging and devices for safe shipment via air freight or in mountainous regions.
- Outdoor and Remote Installations: Validates performance of field equipment installed at significant elevations.
- Defense & Military Applications: Certifying devices for use in varying altitude environments.
The test helps identify potential issues such as material deformation, seal failures, performance degradation, or other vulnerabilities that may only appear under low-pressure conditions.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive environmental testing, IEC 60068-2-13:2021 should be used in conjunction with other relevant international standards, such as:
- IEC 60068-1: Environmental testing – Part 1: General and guidance.
- IEC 60068-2-2: Environmental testing – Test B: Dry heat.
- IEC 60068-2-39: Environmental testing – Combined temperature or temperature and humidity with low air pressure tests.
- IEC 60721-2-3: Classification of environmental conditions – Air pressure.
- IEC 60721-3: Classification of environmental parameters and their severities.
- ISO 2533: Standard atmosphere.
Each of these standards supports a holistic approach to environmental stress testing, ensuring products are robust against a range of climatic and atmospheric challenges.
