In addition to the general requirements of IEC 60077-2, it gives the rules for circuit-breakers, the main contacts of which are to be connected to d.c. power and/or auxiliary circuits. The nominal voltage of these circuits does not exceed 3 000 V d.c. according to IEC 60850.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60077-3:2001 is a crucial international standard that outlines the rules for d.c. (direct current) circuit-breakers used in railway applications, specifically for electric equipment on rolling stock. It forms Part 3 of the IEC 60077 series, which addresses electrotechnical components for railway rolling stock. This standard complements IEC 60077-2 by focusing on the requirements and performance characteristics of circuit-breakers connected to d.c. power or auxiliary circuits, with nominal voltages not exceeding 3,000 V d.c. as per IEC 60850.
This standard is essential in ensuring safe, reliable, and effective electrical protection and interruption within railway vehicles' electric circuits. It provides guidelines for design, construction, testing, and operational criteria tailored to the unique demands of railway systems.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
Specifies criteria for d.c. circuit-breakers used in rolling stock electric circuits up to 3,000 V d.c., addressing their construction and operational requirements. -
Definitions and Classifications
Clear terminology for components, parts, operational and breaking features, assisting manufacturers and users in uniform understanding. -
Rated Values and Characteristics
Includes rated voltages, currents, time constants, and short-circuit breaking capabilities to ensure circuit-breakers can withstand typical railway operational stresses. -
Construction and Performance
Sets out mechanical construction rules, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements, temperature limits, vibration and shock resistance, acoustic noise limits, and dielectric properties for circuit-breakers. -
Operational Conditions and Tests
Describes normal service conditions and test sequences, including type tests, routine series tests, and investigation tests that verify performance attributes like switching capacity under short-circuit conditions, mechanical endurance, insulation, and sealing. -
Documentation and Marking
Specifies the information that must accompany the circuit-breaker, including product identification, rated values, and test results for traceability and compliance assurance.
Applications
IEC 60077-3:2001 is extensively applied in the railway industry for:
-
Electric Rolling Stock Manufacturing
Designing and producing safe and reliable d.c. circuit-breakers integrated into rolling stock electrical systems. -
System Integration and Maintenance
Guiding engineers and technicians in selecting compatible circuit-breakers that meet prescribed operational and safety standards. -
Railway Safety Assurance
Providing standardized methods to test electrical equipment, ensuring safe disconnection during faults and reducing risks of electrical failures. -
Compliance and Certification
Serving as a reference for regulatory bodies and certification authorities to verify product conformance before deployment.
This standard supports the robust functioning of electric trains, light rail vehicles, and other forms of rolling stock that rely on d.c. systems for traction power and auxiliary circuits.
