IEC 60086-3:2016 specifies dimensions, designation, methods of tests and requirements for primary batteries for watches. In several cases, a menu of test methods is given. When presenting battery electrical characteristics and/or performance data, the manufacturer specifies which test method was used. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2011. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - A harmonization of the cell sizes and service output tests with IEC 60086-2; - Clarifications of Clauses 6: Sampling and Quality Assurance, 7: Test methods, and 8: Visual examination and acceptance condition; - Harmonization of temperature and humidity conditions with IEC 60086-1. This publication is published as a double logo standard. Keywords: primary batteries for watches
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60086-3:2016 - Primary batteries - Part 3: Watch batteries is the fourth edition (2016) of the international standard that specifies dimensions, designation, test methods and performance requirements for primary batteries for watches. Prepared jointly by IEC TC 35 and ISO TC 114 and published as a double‑logo standard, it updates the 2011 edition and harmonizes cell sizes, service output tests and environmental conditions with related IEC parts. Where multiple test methods are provided, manufacturers must state which method was used when presenting electrical or performance data.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Physical requirements and dimensions: standardized battery sizes, symbols and terminal shapes to ensure mechanical compatibility with watches.
- Terminals and mechanical performance: terminal types, projection limits, deformation and mechanical resistance to pressure.
- Electrical characteristics: standardized electrochemical systems, nominal voltage, open‑circuit voltage (OCV), closed‑circuit voltage (CCV), internal resistance/impedance, capacity and capacity retention.
- Test methods and measurement: a menu of test procedures for OCV/CCV measurement, internal resistance calculation, capacity measurement and discharge profiles; environmental conditioning (temperature/humidity) is specified.
- Leakage resistance and durability tests: high temperature/humidity tests, temperature cycling and visual leakage classification.
- Sampling and quality assurance: sampling by attributes and by variables, product quality indices and acceptance criteria; clarifications provided in Clause 6.
- Visual examination and acceptance: inspection conditions, magnification, lighting and defined leakage classification levels for pass/fail decisions.
- Marking and disposal information: required labeling practices for safe use and end‑of‑life handling.
Practical applications
- Ensures mechanical and electrical compatibility between watch batteries and watch movements during product development.
- Provides test procedures for R&D and type‑approval testing in battery manufacturers’ labs and third‑party test houses.
- Supports quality assurance and production sampling plans to control lot acceptance for commercial supply.
- Informs procurement specifications, safety assessments and compliance documentation for watchmakers and electronics integrators.
- Guides designers in selecting cells with appropriate capacity, internal resistance and leakage resistance for long‑term reliability.
