IEC 60092-360:2014 specifies the requirements for electrical, mechanical and particular characteristics of insulating and sheathing materials intended for use in shipboard and fixed and mobile offshore unit power, control, instrumentation and telecommunication cables. This first edition cancels and replaces IEC 60092-351 Ed. 3 published in 2004 and IEC 60092-359 Ed. 1 published in 1987, Amendment 1:1994 and Amendment 2:1992. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60092-360:2014 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the requirements for insulating and sheathing materials used in electrical cables on ships and offshore units. This standard applies specifically to power, control, instrumentation, and telecommunication cables deployed on shipboard and fixed or mobile offshore platforms. The 2014 edition replaces earlier versions, introducing technical revisions to align with current maritime electrical safety and performance demands.
By establishing stringent electrical, mechanical, and chemical resistance criteria, IEC 60092-360:2014 ensures the reliability, durability, and safety of cables exposed to harsh marine environments. It addresses materials suitable for insulation and outer sheaths, with particular attention given to properties such as temperature tolerance, oil and fluid resistance, and mechanical endurance.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
Defines requirements for electrical, mechanical, and environmental characteristics of insulating and sheathing compounds used in maritime electrical installations. -
Insulating Materials
Specifies types of cross-linked insulating compounds, their electrical properties, mechanical strengths, and applicable tests. -
Sheathing Materials
Differentiates between cross-linked and thermoplastic sheathing compounds, outlining the mechanical and environmental tests they must satisfy. -
Enhanced Resistance Properties
Introduces optional categories for sheathing materials with improved resistance to oil and drilling fluids, tailored for offshore applications. -
Testing Procedures and Requirements
Includes detailed test methods for hardness, elastic modulus, and immersion in hot oil and drilling fluids, ensuring materials perform reliably under operational stresses. -
Updates from Previous Editions
Rationalization of material types, removal of certain tests, and adjustments of temperature limits to reflect modern operating conditions on ships and offshore units.
Applications
IEC 60092-360:2014 is a vital standard for:
-
Shipboard Electrical Systems
Ensuring cable materials meet necessary safety and performance standards for power distribution, control, and communication systems on vessels. -
Offshore Platforms
Guiding the selection of insulating and sheathing materials that can withstand aggressive environments including exposure to oil, drilling fluids, temperature fluctuations, and mechanical stresses. -
Cable Manufacturers
Providing material specifications that facilitate consistent production of maritime cables conforming to international safety and operational standards. -
Classification Societies and Marine Inspectors
Serving as a reference for certifying and approving maritime electrical installations, contributing to compliance and risk mitigation. -
Design Engineers and Electrical Installers
Assisting in the selection of appropriate cables that ensure functionality and durability for shipboard and offshore electrical infrastructure.
Related Standards
IEC 60092-360 is part of the broader IEC 60092 series, which covers electrical installations in ships and offshore units. Related standards include:
-
IEC 60092-350 – Covers test methods for electrical cables in maritime applications, complementing the material requirements specified in Part 360.
-
IEC 60092-359 – Superseded by this edition, previously addressed similar insulation and sheathing materials.
-
IEC 60092-351 – Focused on power, control, instrumentation, and telecommunication cables themselves.
-
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 – Provides guidance on drafting and structuring international standards, underpinning the development of IEC 60092-360.
