This part of IEC 60092 is applicable to a.c. supply systems with voltages from 1 kV up to and including 15 kV.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60092-503:2007 is Part 503 of the IEC 60092 series - the international standard for electrical installations in ships - and applies specifically to AC supply systems with voltages above 1 kV up to and including 15 kV. Published as the second edition in 2007, the document updates requirements for shipboard high-voltage (HV) systems and complements other parts of IEC 60092. It is intended as a practical code for designers, shipbuilders, operators and classification societies involved in marine power distribution and shipboard high-voltage installations.
Key Topics
The standard covers technical requirements and special features for marine AC systems in the 1–15 kV range, including:
- Scope and system designation: nominal, highest and lowest operating voltages (r.m.s. values).
- General requirements: voltage/frequency limits, warning notices and controlled access to HV installations.
- Insulation coordination: insulation levels and references to IEC insulation standards.
- Clearances and creepage distances: minimum distances for uninsulated conductors and equipment (tabulated requirements are provided).
- Earthing and neutrals: earthing arrangements, generator and transformer neutral treatments, and interconnection/disconnection rules.
- Distribution system design: divided systems, auxiliary circuits, busbar arrangements, generator circuits, outgoing circuits, power-transformer and shore-connection circuits.
- Protection and monitoring: generator, motor, transformer and overvoltage protection; earth-fault monitoring and general protective principles.
- Equipment requirements: design and installation guidance for AC generators, motors, transformers, switchgear, switchboards, controlgear, fuses and cables - including construction, enclosure, performance and testing.
- Cables and terminations: selection, installation, current rating and testing for high-voltage shipboard cables.
Applications
IEC 60092-503 is used for the safe design, construction, testing and operation of shipboard high-voltage AC power systems. Typical users include:
- Marine electrical engineers and system designers specifying HV distribution on ships and offshore units
- Shipyards and manufacturers of switchgear, transformers and HV cables
- Classification societies and flag administrations evaluating compliance with marine electrical regulations
- Fleet operators and shipowners planning upgrades, shore-connection interfaces or integrating higher-voltage power systems
- Inspectors and test labs performing acceptance testing and verification of insulation, clearances and protective devices
Related Standards
IEC 60092-503 references and complements multiple IEC publications, for example:
- IEC 60092 series (other parts such as 201, 202, 350, 353, 354)
- IEC 60034 (rotating machines), IEC 60076 (power transformers)
- IEC 60071-1/2 (insulation coordination)
- IEC 60265-1 / IEC 62271 (high-voltage switchgear)
- IEC 60502 (power cables) and IEC 60282-1 (high-voltage fuses)
For designers and specifiers of shipboard high-voltage systems, IEC 60092-503 is an essential reference for safe, compliant marine power distribution in the 1 kV–15 kV range.
