IEC 60127-2:2014 relates to special requirements applicable to cartridge fuse-links for miniature fuses with dimensions measuring 5 mm x 20 mm and 6,3 mm x 32 mm for the protection of electric appliances, electronic equipment and component parts thereof, normally intended for use indoors. It does not apply to cartridge fuse-links for appliances intended to be used under special conditions, such as in corrosive or explosive atmospheres. This standard applies in addition to the requirements of IEC 60127-1. The object of this standard is to define special and additional test methods for cartridge fuse-links applying in addition to the requirements of IEC 60127-1. This third edition of IEC 60127-2 cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2010. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: add 4 new standard sheets 7 up to 10. Keywords: cartridge fuse-links for miniature fuses, protection of electric appliances, electronic equipment and component This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60127-1:2006.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60127-2:2014 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) specifically addressing miniature cartridge fuse-links. This part of the IEC 60127 series outlines the special requirements and additional test methods applicable to cartridge fuse-links with standard dimensions of 5 mm × 20 mm and 6.3 mm × 32 mm. These fuse-links are primarily intended for the protection of electric appliances, electronic equipment, and related components used mainly in indoor environments.
This third edition supersedes the 2010 version and includes significant technical updates such as the introduction of four new standard sheets (7 to 10). It is designed to be used alongside IEC 60127-1:2006, which covers general definitions and requirements for miniature fuses.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application: IEC 60127-2 focuses on cartridge fuse-links for miniature fuses that protect electric and electronic devices under normal indoor conditions. It explicitly excludes fuse-links for use in special or harsh environments, such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres.
-
Standard Ratings and Dimensions: The standard defines the nominal sizes (5 mm × 20 mm and 6.3 mm × 32 mm) and relevant electrical ratings, ensuring compatibility and interchangeability in miniature fuse applications.
-
Technical Requirements: The document specifies electrical performance parameters, including voltage ratings, breaking capacity, time-current characteristics, and voltage drop.
-
Marking and Identification: Clear guidance on mandatory markings enables easy identification of fuse specifications and traceability.
-
Testing Procedures: Comprehensive testing protocols cover mechanical, electrical, and thermal performance, such as breaking capacity tests, solderability, resistance to heat, and axial pull tests on terminations. Detailed test circuits and equipment setups are included to ensure uniform quality and safety.
-
Standard Sheets Update: The 2014 edition incorporates four new standard sheets (7 through 10), providing additional design and testing templates to accommodate evolving technology requirements.
Applications
Miniature cartridge fuse-links conforming to IEC 60127-2:2014 are widely utilized in:
-
Electric Appliances: Protection of household and commercial electrical devices from overloads and short circuits.
-
Electronic Equipment: Safeguarding sensitive electronic circuits in consumer electronics, communication devices, and computing hardware.
-
Component Integration: Ensuring reliable protection within electronic subassemblies and modules used in industrial and consumer applications.
Using standardized cartridge fuse-links helps manufacturers and designers achieve consistent product quality, enhance safety features, and streamline regulatory compliance across multiple markets.
