This part of IEC 60254 is applicable to lead acid traction batteries used as power sources for electric propulsion. The tests defined are relevant to all traction battery applications which include road vehicles, locomotives, industrial trucks and mechanical handling equipments. Tests which may be used specifically to test batteries developed for use in vehicles such as light passenger vehicles, motor cycles, light commercial vehicles, etc. may be found in alternative standards e.g. IEC 61982-2. The object of this standard is to specify certain essential characteristics of traction batteries or cells, together with the relevant test methods of those characteristics.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60254-1:2005 - Lead-acid traction batteries - Part 1: General requirements and methods of test - defines essential characteristics and standardized test methods for lead‑acid traction batteries used as power sources for electric propulsion. The standard covers batteries for road vehicles, locomotives, industrial trucks and material‑handling equipment and specifies how to evaluate capacity, charge retention, high‑rate performance and cyclic endurance under reproducible conditions.
Key topics and requirements
- Functional characteristics
- Capacity (C): nominal capacity is declared at 30 °C, 5 h discharge and a cut‑off voltage of 1.70 V per cell. Actual capacity is verified by the 5 h capacity test (see 5.2).
- Charge retention: residual dischargeable capacity after storage on open circuit under defined temperature/time (see 5.3).
- High‑rate discharge performance: represented by a 1 h discharge to a cut‑off voltage of 1.6 V per cell at 30 °C (see 5.4); applied when high current rates are required.
- Cyclic endurance: number of discharge/recharge cycles until capacity falls to 0.8 C_N (see 5.5). This is a destructive test and requires at least three cells.
- General test conditions
- Instruments must meet accuracy classes (voltmeters and ammeters 0.5 class or better; voltmeter resistance ≥ 1 000 Ω/V; time measurement ±1%).
- Temperature measurement: probe immersed in electrolyte where accessible; accuracy 1 K.
- Electrolyte density: hydrometers with division ≤ 5 kg/m³ and absolute accuracy 5 kg/m³.
- Tests performed on unused, fully charged batteries within three months of manufacture; electrolyte level and topping‑up water per manufacturer instructions.
- Test sequence
- Typical sequence: 5 h capacity, charge retention (optional), 1 h high‑rate discharge (optional). Cyclic endurance is separate and destructive.
Applications and who uses it
- Battery manufacturers - product design verification and type approval.
- Test laboratories - standardized methods for performance and acceptance testing.
- Electric vehicle OEMs and fleet operators - specifying battery performance for traction applications (industrial trucks, locomotives, EVs).
- Procurement and compliance teams - setting contractual performance requirements and acceptance tests.
- Standards and quality engineers - integrating test results into product specifications and lifecycle planning.
