IEC 60269-3:2024 is divided into four fuse systems, each dealing with a specific example of standardized fuses for use by unskilled persons. This part applies to “gG” fuses only. Unskilled persons do not have technical knowledge or sufficient experience. To avoid dangers, which electricity may create, the relevant part of the fuse standard shall provide requirements for maximum safety in service. IEC 60269-3 provides four systems for use by unskilled persons. Instructions for the safe operation of fuse-links are provided in the manufacturer’s literature. All systems provide their own mechanical solution to avoid the use of a fuse-link with higher current rating (non-interchangeability) whereas the protection of cables and lines is ensured. The applicant is required to take care to replace a fuse-link by the same type. The content of the corrigendum 1 (2025-11) has been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60269-3:2024, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), specifies supplementary requirements for low-voltage fuses designed for operation by unskilled persons, predominantly in household and similar environments. This standard applies exclusively to "gG" type fuses, which are general application fuses for the protection of cables and lines. It addresses safety considerations to ensure that individuals without technical knowledge or experience can replace and operate fuses safely, minimizing risks associated with electricity. The standard outlines four distinct, standardized fuse systems (systems A to F, with focus on A, B, C, and F) and incorporates mechanical provisions to prevent improper fuse-link replacement, ensuring non-interchangeability and consistent protection levels.
Key Topics
- Supplementary safety requirements: Additional requirements for fuses to be safe for operation by persons without technical training.
- Standardized fuse systems: Details and requirements for four recognized systems (A, B, C, and F), clarifying roles and safe implementation in household applications.
- Non-interchangeability: Specific mechanical designs that prevent the insertion of fuse-links with incorrect current ratings, thereby reducing the risk of fire or electric shock due to improper replacements.
- Marking and identification: Guidelines for clear and durable identification of fuse elements, including bases and carriers, to ease safe replacement by unskilled persons and prevent misuse.
- Testing procedures: Standard tests to verify performance characteristics, temperature rise, breaking capacity, resistance to heat, and protection against electric shock.
- Manufacturer instructions: The importance of following manufacturer literature and recommendations when replacing or operating fuse-links.
Applications
IEC 60269-3:2024 is mainly used in:
- Household electrical installations: Ensuring that common fuse replacements and operations carried out by homeowners or tenants remain safe and reliable.
- Similar low-voltage environments: Applicable to various non-industrial locations where regular users, not trained electricians, may need to interact with fuse systems, such as small business premises, schools, or hotels.
- Fuse system standardization: Facilitates international compatibility and interoperability of fuse devices specified in systems A (D type), B (NF cylindrical), C (BS cylindrical), and F (BS plugtop).
- Protection of cables and lines: Guarantees that compliance with "gG" fuse specifications provides the necessary level of circuit protection required in household and similar applications.
- Replacement and maintenance: The standardized systems and marking requirements support safe, error-free replacement by individuals, reducing the risk of accidental misuse.
Related Standards
Integration and compatibility with other international standards increase the utility and clarity of IEC 60269-3:2024. Key related standards include:
- IEC 60269-1 – Low-voltage fuses – Part 1: General requirements, providing foundational definitions and testing for all low-voltage fuses.
- IEC 60269-2 – Low-voltage fuses – Part 2: Requirements for fuses for industrial and commercial applications, focusing on use by skilled persons.
- IEC 60269-4 – Low-voltage fuses – Part 4: Additional requirements for fuse applications in specialized environments.
Practical Value
The adoption of IEC 60269-3:2024 helps manufacturers, installers, and end-users:
- Enhance household electrical safety by mandating designs suitable for unskilled operation.
- Simplify fuse replacement with clear marking and physically non-interchangeable designs.
- Ensure consistent circuit protection according to international best practices.
- Adhere to regulatory requirements and support global trade of safe electrical components.
