IEC 60282-2:2008 provides requirements for expulsion fuses designed for use outdoors or indoors on alternating current systems of 50 Hz and 60 Hz, and of rated voltages exceeding 1 000 V. The main changes with regard to the previous edition include: - Class C has been eliminated; - TRV values have been reviewed and, where appropriate, harmonized with IEC 62271-100:2001, its amendment 1 (2002) and amendment 2 (2006); - tests for non-ceramic insulators have been included; - a lightning surge impulse withstand test for fuse-links has been included; and - an homogeneous series has been redefined.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60282-2:2008 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for high-voltage expulsion fuses designed for alternating current systems operating at 50 Hz or 60 Hz with rated voltages above 1,000 V. This third edition introduces significant updates from the previous version, including the elimination of Class C fuses, harmonized transient recovery voltage (TRV) values with related standards, and new test methods for both non-ceramic insulators and lightning surge impulse withstand for fuse-links. The standard aims to provide globally accepted criteria ensuring reliability, safety, and compatibility of expulsion fuses used both indoors and outdoors in high-voltage electrical distribution and protection systems.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application: The standard applies to high-voltage expulsion fuses installed in alternating current (AC) systems with rated voltages exceeding 1,000 V, commonly used in outdoor or indoor environments for electrical protection.
-
Classification and Designation: The standard classifies fuse-links into various categories and eliminates the obsolete Class C. It also provides speed designations and detailed nomenclature for identifying fuse characteristics.
-
Electrical Ratings: Specifies rated voltage, current, breaking capacity, frequency, and insulation levels essential for reliable fuse operation under rated system conditions.
-
Standard Test Procedures: Includes comprehensive requirements for type tests, special tests, and acceptance tests, such as dielectric tests, temperature rise, breaking tests, mechanical endurance, and lightning surge impulse withstand tests for fuse-links.
-
Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV): TRV values have been reviewed and harmonized with related standards (IEC 62271-100 and its amendments) for consistency in breaking capacity testing.
-
Materials and Components: Addresses the inclusion of non-ceramic insulators and the redefinition of the homogeneous series of fuse components for improved performance and safety.
-
Markings and Documentation: Specifies manufacturer markings, identification protocols, and information that must accompany the product for traceability and proper application.
Applications
IEC 60282-2:2008 plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and effective operation of high-voltage electrical networks by standardizing expulsion fuse design and performance. Its practical applications include:
-
Power Distribution Networks: Use in overhead lines, substations, and distribution transformers for fault isolation and overload protection in medium and high-voltage networks.
-
Industrial Power Systems: Protecting industrial electrical equipment and switchgear from short-circuits, overloads, and transient faults in large-scale applications.
-
Renewable Energy Integration: Ensuring coordinated protection in renewable energy systems such as wind and solar plants where high-voltage equipment protection is critical.
-
Utility and Infrastructure: Support for electric utilities in deploying standardized, reliable fuses that conform to international safety and performance benchmarks.
By adhering to IEC 60282-2:2008, engineers, manufacturers, and utilities can ensure that expulsion fuses provide predictable operation, withstand environmental stresses, and protect electrical assets effectively.
Related Standards
IEC 60282-2:2008 is part of the broader IEC 60282 series, which covers high-voltage fuses with different construction and applications. Key related standards include:
