IEC 60297-3-102:2004 Covers only the additional interface dimensions for injector/extractor devices used with subracks and plug-in units according to IEC 60297-3-101. May also be used in conjunction with IEC 60297-3-103.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60297-3-102:2004 specifies the additional mechanical interface dimensions for injector/extractor handles used with 482.6 mm (19 in) subracks and plug-in units. It does not redefine subrack or plug-in unit dimensions (those are in IEC 60297-3-101); instead it provides the complementary dimensions and clearances required for reliable front-panel and printed-board mounted injector/extractor devices. The standard covers two handle types: Type A (front-panel mounted) and Type B (printed-board mounted), and clarifies where these devices create incompatibilities with the baseline 19 in series.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose
- Defines only the additional interface dimensions required for injector/extractor devices used with IEC 60297-3-101 subracks and plug-in units.
- May be used together with IEC 60297-3-103 (keying and alignment pin).
- Handle arrangements
- Type A: front-panel mounted injector/extractor - includes subrack aperture requirements and plug-in unit interface limits. Type A arrangements can render a subrack incompatible with IEC 60297-3-101 if fitted.
- Type B: printed-board mounted injector/extractor - defines PCB keep-out areas and board-mounted receptacle clearances.
- Critical dimensions and notes
- Subrack aperture height (H21) required for injector/extractor operation: 3U = 129.20 mm, 6U = 262.55 mm, 9U = 395.90 mm (as specified in Table 1).
- Handle interface must not exceed pitch lines or intrude into the usable component area or subrack height separation plane.
- Type B requires PCB keep-out areas (both sides) and prescribes mounting/spacing so that box-type plug-in units may be restricted if the full subrack width is occupied.
- 3U boards may be fitted with one or two handles; 6U and 9U sizes shall be fitted with two handles.
Applications
This standard is directly applicable to:
- Mechanical designers and CAD engineers creating 19 in subracks, front panels and plug-in units that incorporate injector/extractor mechanisms.
- PCB designers integrating board-mounted handles and defining keep-out areas for components.
- Hardware manufacturers, rack integrators and system suppliers ensuring mechanical compatibility and reliable insertion/extraction operations.
- Procurement, compliance and quality assurance teams verifying conformity with IEC 60297 series mechanical interfaces.
Using IEC 60297-3-102 helps prevent mechanical interference, ensures consistent handle placement and clearance, and reduces field failures during module insertion/extraction.
